I found out about Lynch when I was looking up some of the higher rated movies of the 1980's. I had seen The Elephant Man when I was a kid, but I just recently watched Blue Velvet and I loved it.
Then, I watched Mulholland Dr. It's probably one of the best movies ever made. I still can't completely wrap my mind around the story. It's simply too much. I watched The Straight Story after, and I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't like in the vein of Mulholland/Highway/Blue Velvet/Twin Peaks, but it was special. Farnsworth and Spacek are incredibly gifted and their roles solidify that.
Now, I'm watching the series Twin Peaks, and every episode is like a Lynch feature. It's flawless so far.
Anyways, what does everyone here think about Lynch and his body of work? Favorite film? Thoughts on Mulholland? Feel free to discuss anything Lynch.

One of my favorite directors. My favorite film of his is Eraserhead, with Mulholland Dr. at a close second. I'm a huge fan of his artwork too.

Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows ever. I've watched it through over a dozen times in the past almost two decades, from videotapes of the eps, to it being released on vhs and dvd. Love it.
I like Lynch a lot. Wild At Heart is a great film and book series. But some stuff just gets lost on me.

I've never seen any of his work. You are missing out tremendously. Start out with Blue Velvet, then watch Mulholland Drive. You'll remember Mulholland forever, and maybe never forget it. You may have to watch it a few times though.

I don't have a video store near me any more, so it's kind of hard to watch movies unless I go to a theater or see it on TV.

You won't likely see these movies on cable, and if you did, it would probably taint the experience. I suggest either buying the DVD's, or if you're not confident in that, watch them on the Internet.

Just checked, Encore (Drama) has Mulholland Dr on the schedule for Wednesday. And they show movies uncensored, at least I'm pretty sure they do, so I'll tape it and watch it.

I don't like him, I tried watching Eraserhead and The Short Films of David Lynch, both were so awful I couldn't even finish watching them. I think he's a weirdo and his movies suck.

I'm kind of torn with him. One of my closest friends absolutely adores him and has shown me some of his stuff which I've quite enjoyed. Eraserhead in particular, is very fascinating; Has an almost nightmarish feel about it that I'll never forget. At the same time, the guy has built up such a fanbase that he could easily make anything and pass it off as some high form of art. I do like him, but there are better art house directors who get way less recognition.
That said, I do currently have Lost Highway on top of my 'DVDs to see' pile. The premise sounds the best out of all his movies and I've been aching to see it for a long time now. Perhaps I'll change my mind after I see it.

Ive seen like an hour and 10 minutes of Mulholland Drive and I was confused beyond belief. Might have to watch ALL of it to fully grasp it.

It's my least favorite Lynch film, and even he admits me made it with no narrative structure, it isn't supposed to make sense. It's just random events constantly happening and it all means nohting. That's the meaning. So if his obtuse nature towards arthouse bothers you, Lost Highway probably won't be your favorite of his. Then again, it could. Who knows.

So far I've only seen Eraserhead and The Elephant Man but I'm a fan. Keep meaning to get around to watching Blue Velvet and Muloholland Drive on Netflix streaming.

This is precisely why I'm kinda hostile towards Lynch. I think Eraserhead found a brilliant balance between strong, ambiguous imagery but with a universal, concise interpretation to round it off. I find the same with a lot of his shorts but not in any of his other work I've seen so far. You definitely have to have to be in the right frame of mind to sit down and watch a Lynch film. I think having read this about Lost Highway, I may put off seeing it for even longer haha!

I have a collection of his shorts on DVD and it's probably my absolute favorite. Elephant Man would probably be second.
