This isn't a news report, this was just something I was thinking about. I was just watching MMA Live, and Rashad Evans, when asked about his future fight, had this to say.
"I don't know, man. You know you've been out a long time when the last guy you fought has a fight coming up before you. I've been thinking about maybe taking any fight, you know, just for something to do."
To me, that sounds like a guy who is borderline frustrated and maybe worried about rust becoming a factor. He fought in May, and with the rumors being that Shogun could be ready for a come back by February or even March at the earliest, that is quite a lay off. 10 months is the exact time frame Rampage complained about after the Forrest fight, saying it was way too long and he does not want to do it again.
Here's where Randy Couture comes in.
Rashad said he would take a fight in the mean time to keep himself busy. Now, this isn't boxing. We can't pluck some bum off the street to keep Rashad busy and expect it to be taken kindly. I think Randy Couture is the perfect guy to put in the cage with Rashad in this situation. Couture is coming off of 3 straight wins, over Brandon Vera, Mark Coleman, and James Toney. Whether he currently deserves it or not, there are people who will throw his name around in the title picture.
A Couture vs. Evans fight would be interesting because if Randy wins, I think we would definitely see this become the official Couture retirement tour. If he managed to get past Evans, and received a shot at the champion, I would put a lot of money on the fact that the title fight would be his final outing. If he lost to Evans, I think we may see that also be his final outing.
I am a huge Randy Couture fan and have no issues with him retiring right now, I think it's a great time for it, he's coming off of 3 wins and has looked good in all of his fights. But if you've seen Rocky Balboa, I think you can relate Couture to Stallone's character in that movie. Rocky said about his come-out-of-retirement fight, "I think I still have a little bit left in the basement."
I think it would be a great fight, I'd be really interested in seeing it, and it helps Couture as much as it helps Rashad. It's a very even gamble.
Thoughts?
