I'd also like to point out that LeBron James was the only starter on Miami to have a positive +/- tonight, even with some of his selfish play.
Wade has been over rated and inconsistent for years.

I really like the Rockets this year. They might just have the best backcourt in the league. Along with major depth and good coaching they probably are the biggest threats in the west to the Lakers.

You are right, their coaching is a huge factor. Adelman has that team pushing every year and probably would have been an NBA Champion had it not been for the Lakers or Bulls.
I watched a few minutes of the first and was astonished at how well Yao was moving for having 16 screws in that ankle.
He actually looked better than before, in terms of some of his lateral movement. But I noticed while starting to run up court he takes it easier and also on that one play where he got the first rebound, then the second, then went up again during the foul call....
his initial jump is still damn good but his second and third pop were gone. That might come back in time, but he also never really had it to begin with.
Don't sleep on Scola either...

Yao isn't even really needed to do that much for this team except rebound and play above average defense when he is in. The depth this team has along with such an underrated big in Scola will really push them. Anything big Yao contributes is a huge plus, but it's not like it's necessary for them to be up their.
Didn't really get a chance to comment on the Heat/Celtics game, so...
For the first game with the Heat as a team, they looked really sloppy down the stretch and they shot a hell of a lot of jumpshots against a good perimeter defending team. LeBron had a good game, but when the other two are playing that bad you can't expect to win with other limited options, including Miller the killer hurt. Why wasn't Chalmers playing? I was wondering this when Eddie House was in the game just chucking everything he could. Celtics played really well, with good contribution out of just about everyone. They played tremendous defense through out the entire game.

Yea I didn't understand Miami's use of the point guard position at all.
LeBron seemed to play it a lot, but not as a point guard. He was playing it the way he did in Cleveland (using 1 team mate or taking the space and shooting it).
Arroyo was just terrible.
Why not put Wade there and run some real sets? Work the ball continuously. How many of Rondo's points or assists come upon his second touch in the same possession? Why can't Wade do that? Why can LeBron lurk off to the side or actually be the focal point of the end of a play?

I had a great time, the place was pumped and I was really enjoying watching their latest acquisitions. I think Mathews is gonna be better than I anticipated and Johnson for a rook showed a lot of composure playing in a tight game.
Their defense was really disappointing though, but it's only the first game of the season and I never put much if any stock into the first game if not first month of the season.

I think the first month can tell you a lot about a team's drive and chemistry.
Denver 2 years ago, when Billups showed up in the trade and they didn't have any training camp or preseason. But they came out and locked it down on D and messed up some top teams early in the season (even days after first playing together). Then, they went to the Western Finals.
While I totally get that there isn't much stock in the first month, and poor play can certainly be turned around or shown to be irrelevant, I do think you can see something there.
I heard Roy wants the ball more this season... looks like it was spread around tonight but you can't complain with the way the entire team played. Roy putting up 6 assists and 3 steals is serious business, says a lot about how prime this team is for a good regular season.

In the end, what killed the Heat tonight was the turnovers from their main guys. 8 for LeBron and 6 for Wade.

Yeah the Heat looked really bad on offenesne. Granted you'd have to assume that they'll get it figured out eventually, but still, tonight showed no promise. Boston showed why they have been to 2 of the last 3 finals, and why they still may be the top dog in the east. The depth they have is insane. I also didnt get why Chalmers wasnt playing (or starting for that matter; Arroyo is terrible), but yea it'll be interesting to see how things take course.
Can't wait for the Bulls to finally tip it off tonight. This is the most excited I've been for Bulls basketball in a long time. I think they'll be able to hang around until Boozer gets back, and hopefully he can help them do what he was brought here to do; take them to the next level. Won't be easy in OKC tonight, but if they can steal one on the road, it would show great poise by this team that has big expectations this year.

What's crazy is that as bad as they looked which is very understandable that they would look that sloppy, especially in what I thought was a trap game... but they still came within 3 and could have won that game. That's talent. You give those guys a few weeks of play, a chance to build some continuity they are going to be blowing teams up.

It feels good to be rooting for a legit contender again. I just really wish Boozer hadn't gotten hurt . That would make tonight much more awesome

The Bulls are one great shooter away from being the best team in the NBA IMO.
With Boozer back of course.

With Rose developing as well as Noah dominating inside the Bulls are a great team. People forget a couple years ago Luol Deng was one of the league's best small forwards. Him healthy is huge for the Bulls. Boozer being out will hurt them, but it won't kill them. I still think they need someone else in that backcourt with Rose who can take pressure off of Rose, which they can probably get easily near the deadline.

There was a year and more particularly a playoff run where Deng put up over 20 something points per game. I remember this well, people thought he was finally arriving as a top tier player. But, he fell off the next year. I've never been sold on Deng but I will admit he's still a wildcard who could blossom late. He's got the wingspan of an eagle and his mid range touch is nice.
Boston has so many guys now, it's crazy. They are like the Yankees in the late 90's. Boston needs to stay healthy and they could take the East. Pierce's health is important too, last year he was really flat in game 7 and in a lot of playoff games. He had some big nights but he also was too streaky for my liking. It looked like his legs were gone late in games.

yea that's a damn good sign to see Favors rebounding like that in the first half. He and Lopez could be a serious front line.
It's crazy, the Nets and Knicks (two of the laughing stocks of the league last year) could have better front lines than most teams now.
and what do ya know, Cleveland is hanging with the Celtics at the half and Jamison has barely played. At least Cleveland knows what it takes to contend (back to back 60 win seasons, even if he is gone). Byron Scott is also known for getting teams to overproduce in his first season or two.
Knicks bench depth looks really strong right now and are the reason why they are winning this game at the half. Toney Douglas playing huge off the bench... but Ronny Turiaf has been HUGE (3 blocks, 2 steals, 1 offensive rebound), his production is a great replacement for David Lee and the kind of hustle we need.
