I remember when he went nuts on the new generation. I saw Survivor Series 1994 when he won the title after keeping Bret Hart in the Crossface Chickenwing for like 10 minutes, well it looked longer than that. Thinking about it now, they could have made him a strong champion with that gimmick, but he lost the title 3 days later in an 8 second match to Diesel in Madison Square Garden.

I think he said he didnt want to be inducted because he felt he still had one more good run in him.....Seriously -- You'd be surprised. Alot of the wrestlers from back in the day (Thesz, K. Gotch, Inoki, O'Conner, ect) had good runs in them years past their prime because they didn't rely on gimmicks so much, as their natural abilities while taking good care of their bodies, like Backlund does. Personally speaking from having experienced a 1/2 work-1/2 shoot chicken wing by Backlund himself about 10yrs back, the guy put very little effort into it and it stretched my shoulder to the point I was hurtin for 3 days straight lol. The fact that Backlund used to walk back and forth between tapings while he was with TNA just a few years back, instead of catching a cab like most others do, speaks volumns about his physical well-being. But a 2012 nomination is in store And if he were to pop-up in say ROH or TNA or another WWE run, he'd quickly become a favorite of mine all over again!

Backlund gave an interview to NCAA.com a few years back talking about his collegiate career and also mentioned WWE... he made it sound like he has a personal problem with Vince McMahon that will keep him from accepting a Hall of Fame invitation. www.ncaa.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/031905aaa.html

Bret wouldn't drop the strap to any members of The Kliq, huh?

Rumors were that despite Diesel's respect for Backlund putting him over, none of the Kliq members liked Backlund's style and refused to work feuds with him. Hall was particularly vocal about this as I remember.

On one of the WWE Legends roundtables they said Backlund turned it down because the HOF was for retired wrestlers and he still considers himself an active wrestler.
