On 1/11, the grandfather of hardcore will turn the big 7-0. He has been off of TV for most of the last 2 decades, so some younger fans don't know who he is. In case you can't tell simply by looking at a picture of him, he was one of the most feared heels ever to step foot in the ring. As a kid in the 1970s, he scared the snot out of me. Here is a New York Times article on Abby that ran last year. www.nytimes.com/2010/07/26/sports/26wrestler.htmlThere are plenty of matches available on youtube, even though most of them are after he turned 40 and began losing some of his amazing atheticism. Still, he was a ferocious character, realistic striker, and not afraid to spill his own blood or that of his opponent to tell a good in-ring story. Happy B-Day, big guy. You deserve a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame. Get it done, Vince!

Of all the people I thought would make it to 70, he wouldn't of been one of my picks.

HOLY DAMN! 70?!?!?! I never realized he was that old. Wow, I sure as heck didn't think he'd make it to 70, but good for him.
Man his bouts against Brody are the stuff of legends.

His rookie year was 1958, I think. The fact that he's been engaging in violent bloodbaths for over 50 years is mind-boggling.

Great guy to deal with. Glad he has stayed so long. Bloodbaths for that long couldve ended him earlier. 8200th post.

Crazy stuff indeed. I really liked him as a kid and he was one of my brother's favorites when he was in WCW. I made this figure of him a while back and figured I would share it. I made it to sale, but the guy didn't want it, so it was part of my brother's Christmas present, along with a Cactus Jack.

loved abby, one of my all time favs. his stuff vs dick murdoch was amazing As I got older, I began to appreciate Abby's immersion in his character. I remember once in the NWA (perhaps it was WCW by that point), he literally began eating one of the announcer's podiums. It was those kind of things that made it seem like he was legitmately crazy.

I remember singing the praises of this fig when you posted it in the other thead. Bravo. You should tweet a pic of it to Abby. He would appreciate it.

Congrats to Abby, his steel cage match against Brody in WCCW in '86 is still a favourite of mine...

I'd love to see Abby go in. I'm hoping we get to eat at his restaurant while we're down there too

hes a strange choice given the PG direction but I dont suppose that will cross the mark for them if they can find any pics of Abby not juicing LOL

That is crazy. Glad to see he made it to that age as most wrestlers seem to not even make it to 50. I have not seen really ANY of his work. Would some of you mind posting some of his best matches like a list or something?
