The article says earth will be showered in harmless particles that could we could actually benefit from. It's highly unlikely it'd change the temperature. There won't literally be another sun, we'll see a blast from a supernova 1300 light years away. The sun (according to a quick google search) is about 8 light minutes away.

Can't wait. Sounds like it'll be something I'll be able to tell my kids about.

Two suns, and no night for possibly a few weeks? Those would be the best weeks ever (especially if it's during summer). No! Not Betelgeuse! No more Orion = Betelgeuse is apart of Orion? I had a dream last night, and a part of it had me looking at constellation's, specifically Orion. Creepy.

I'm a guy that likes it pitch black to sleep. Light only days for a few weeks would be a bizarre, but awesome at the same time. My sleep schedule would be out of wack so bad by the end of it.

That is interesting. Wonder if it will happen. If it did it would be trippy to see two of them in the sky plus it would be kinda hard to sleep. What about the poor nocturnal animals/

I think it would/will be quite an amazing thing to witness.

There has never been a more appropriate time to use a "Cool story, bro" picture.
Alas, I won't use it anyway. It's been done a thousand times before... overkill is overkill.

Now that I'm thinking about this more... If this star is 1300 light years away... Then how the are we going to see it, when we can't even see Mars with the naked eye MOST of the time, and that's like, next door? I know that Super Novas are very bright, but I think that the assumption that it's going to be a "second sun" doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

stars are millions of miles away yet still are able to send their light all the way to earth. i'm guessing it would be the light this 'sun' would provide that would make it possible to witness.

The first thing that came to mind reading that was if there is no night for a few weeks, dont that mean fruit and vegetable production will dwindle. Cos if you think about it plants absorb CO2 during the day (so they'll do this 24 hours which is a good thing), but if there's no night, plants wont respire which they need to do to live. So without fruit and vegetables, we couldnt get meat, milk, bread.... Couldnt that be catastrophic?
