After seeing Triple H's Basic 10 head sculpt I was so astonished from how far Mattel has come. I mean when HHH first came out the figure didn't really look like him all that much IMO. Now the head is just so much better and that goes for a lot of other figures like Stone Cold, Demolition, LOD, Terry Funk, EG Undertaker, Mark Henry, Kane, CM Punk (gallows 2 pack sculpt) etc. do you all think that Mattel has improved so well in the PAST YEAR? or do you think there are still some flaws and need to improve?

The head sculpts still have a long way to go. However, they have improved.

I always like Mattel's scans. More serious and realistic than the big balloon heads from Jakks. The only thing was Jakks had mroe depth. Why? Because the heads were so big that they had more to work with, and they still do. The TNA line has big heads, therefore giving them more room to make a great sculpt/scan, so most of their heads have come out great. Mattel's head are on a smaller scale, therefore the room they have to work with is limited. Lately, though, they're looking ALOT better than before. And I never disliked them to begin with.

I think some of the newer ones are worse to be honest.. (ie: Cena, Ted DiBiase, Edge)
I haven't seen the Triple H one in person yet..
I guess it's hit or miss really.

Some scans are hit or miss. This is perfect. I mean you get some scans like a Jake Roberts or Rick Rude that are just spot on and then you get some people like Dusty Rhodes or Jim Duggan that are just a little off.

The new Hunter scan still isn't that good IMO, but it is better than it was. I still think that the one thing Jakks has Mattel beat so far in is w/ the head scans. Jakks has some really good scans. Mattel is getting better though.

Personally, I think the old HHH scan was pretty good. The fact that his hair color was wrong and just the paint application, in general, made it worse than it actually is.

Once they fixed the gap that was in the hairline on the first Triple H scan I had no issues with the Triple H scan. Sure the hair color was wrong for a slicked back wet head, but the scan itself was very good. But seeing they use the same company (Gentle Giant Studios) for scanning and same sculpters as Jakks (remember the sculpter who used to post here posted some of her work from both companies) So I'll say this...Just like Jakks some are good and others need work. In the beginning Mattel's main issue wasn't the sculpts, but rather the paint applications of the sculpts.

generally i feel that mattel headscans could use more sculpt depth/detail. for the most part, Jakks headscans have more sculpt depth/detail than Mattels.
in terms of likenesses/expression choices and multiple headscans for people, generally i've been pleased with current WWE figures, but the legends are hit and miss.
i think a lot of the legends headscans from mattel have been poor or average likenesses at best.
for example, macho man. personally i think that if you look past the accessories and beard, it looks nothing like him. but regardless of anyone's individual opinion of the headscan, the collective opinions of it were most definetely mixed. which proves that it can't be that great. its certainly not a dead-on likeness or definitive expression, or else opinion wouldn't have been so mixed.
for the most part, i've felt that Jakks classic headscans are a better likeness and have more detail than the mattel ones.
So yeh, to summarize, if mattel wants more of my money, they need to put more sculpt depth/detail into their headscans, and get better likenesses on the legends.

I grabbed the Signature Series Cena to have the Purple armbands and that scan is his worst so far imo. Dolph Ziggler's Basic 4 scan is perfect imo, while the Elite, and what appears to be his B10, scan is not that good. I would rather have a good scan than a new one just for the sake of having a new scan. Triple H's does look pretty good. If they would put the Basic Swagger scan with the Elite Swagger hair mold, they might actually get that figure right.

Let's be honest here, Jakks had just as many misses as they did hits. But some revisionists act like every scan was perfect.
But to stay on topic, I do think that Mattel scan are getting better. I think the main problem when they first started were the lack of expressions. Almost every scan was strait faced where now we get some emotions. And in some cases that helps catch the wrestlers likeness better.
Another early problem was the eyes. Some guys like Taker had no depth to their eyes. Where the new Elite 8 Taker has plenty. Same could be said for the Miz. His first scan was horrendous mostly due to the eyes.
Another improvement is the facial hair is being molded on instead of painted. I understand what Mattel was trying to do since so many wrestlers change their facial hair weekly. But in some cases (Sheamus, Punk, Triple H) it helps to have a fuller looking beard.
As for the first Triple H scan, I liked it but the hair was a little plain and the beard needed to be molded. But the scan itself was pretty darn good.

The head sculpts were a major reason I didn't start collecting these at first despite the great scale and attention to detail. They've gotten better for the most part. With the Legends, whoever draws the card art really nails that "this is the first look that comes to mind when thinking of this guy." The Warrior, Demolition and straight-faced Rude are great examples of decent looking sculpts but not the look you most associate with the character/legend.

the new Triple H sculpt is terrible imo. but I never thought Mattel was bad at heads, just some of them were iffy.

Only problem I don't like is the hairlines.
I think more of the issue is that the paint apps on the faces aren't good but the scan is fine.

it would take hours to sit down and compare both companies. I feel like Mattel is 50/50 with good & bad, while Jakks was 80/20 or better. I can honestly say there are very few Jakks heads where I just did not get it at all.
Sizing & re-using do not count for the overall look. Also some guys who ended up with R3 or TTL heads wouldn't count either.
Mattel has got some guys spot on (Mark Henry, Dolph Ziggler, Kane Hawk & Animal...to name a few) and they've had some mediocre but still good enough (Kozlov, Undertaker, Christian, Austin, Steamboat) But some have been really bad (Cena, Swagger, Rey, Finlay)
Mattel's biggest problem to me, even more than the heads, are the small upper bodies & small arms. For most guys it works...but when Ezekiel Jackson has the same size figure arms as Kofi Kingston....and DH Smith has the same torso as Tyson Kidd. It bothers me.
