I know we have talked about this many of times. However I don't recall anyone has posted this picture. Well we all know the the 1st order form on the back of the PWI mag this was the ad for the 1989 LJN Figures that was sold by Grand Toys. Warrior (red tights) Bossman Rude (green tights) Warlord King Haku (purple tights white knee pads w/ crown) Andre (black strap but w/ blue boots?) Beefcake (re-release) Studd (re-release) I am sure these were all on a black card. I was working at the time at an apple farm, however I was only 13. I only bought Warrior. Then 2 or 3 months later I got a another ad and the figures were $6.99 with everyone but not Warrior or Andre. So I order Haku, Warlord, Bossman and Rude.

Great story. I am also a LJN collector, but was not born at that time. I have seen this add before though. It is awesome how they displayed the figures, just looks really cool in general. That must have been a great feeling to get those in the mail when you were a kid.

Man, those ads were cool. I remember getting really excited when I saw the ad for the '89 figures!! If only Haku was released in those colors WITH the crown, it would've been SO much better than the one we did get. We got "The Islander" Haku instead of "King" Haku. The detail on the crown is awesome. I really wish we could've got that version of Haku. I wonder if anyone out there has this prototype of King Haku with the crown...

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the box art on the WCW game for the NES is different, too.

I don't get why they have Bigjohn Studd from way back in series #1 of 1984 in this re-released series of 1989. Strange?

I don't get why they have Bigjohn Studd from way back in series #1 of 1984 in this re-released series of 1989. Strange? Because in late 1988 to early 1989, Studd was in a career resurrection. He won the 1989 Royal Rumble, then was getting a pretty big babyface push for a few months, namely by turning down Bobby Heenan, then teasing the feud with Andre with role reversals from their 85 feud. But Andre wasn't in good enough condition to work that kind of feud, and Studd was in no condition to carry him, when Studd needed someone to carry HIM through matches. Around April or May 89 (well after the 89 figure assortment was out), Studd's push basically stopped and he disappeared, presumably due to the same injuries that put him out in 86-87. Studd was getting pushed big as a babyface, and I assume was supposed to get pushed much bigger than he did but his body couldn't take it. LJN got word of these (as they did with most wrestlers before their debut, see Outback Jack) and went ahead and re-released the already made John Studd figure. Since the figure required no molding or retooling, he could easily be inserted into the line with no problems, and thus give kids who may have just been getting into WWF a chance to get the now babyface Studd. Babyfaces sell better than heels. Always have, always will. It seems odd on the outside, but looking at it more in depth, it makes perfect sense

speaking of these ads and having to order...did anyone ever get a letter from ljn containing names that were never produced??? would be cool if someone could post a pic of that so we could see what all names we could have had back in the day...kinda neat i think..or if someone can start a prototype thread with pics of the ljn protos that would be cool too..

The only such thing I've heard of is a few people have a letter telling them to watch out for Series 2 or 3, I forget which, which had the Haiti Kid listed as someone who would be produced. Also, I've heard many times that Slaughter and Mr. T. were desired to be produced but due to licensing restrictions, LJN was unable to do either. The mold for the Slaughter figure has been sold on eBay but it is very unlikely Mr. T. got to the drawing board. What a shame.

I've heard that figures of the Warrior, Haku, Rude, Bossman, etc. were out by fall 1989, but were guys like Ax, DiBiase, Bigelow, etc. re-released before this or directly with them?

Not only Bundy from Series 1, but Beefcake from Series 2. Bundy was gone in early 1988. Beefcake was there, but a repaint was needed, at least, if they were going to re-release it.

I have a magazine somewhere with hasbro card back-esque drawings of Warrior, Andre, Bossman, and a few others. Underneath, there were several names to look for including Smash, Barbarian, Brother Love, Bad News Brown, and a few others. I still haven't found it, but I know that I have it. I will be moving to California soon, so when I do I know I will uncover it and post it.
