UFC Buys Strikeforce: What It Means for the World's Heavyweight MMA DivisionHuge news broke this afternoon as the UFC’s parent company, Zuffa, purchased the world’s second biggest MMA company, Strikeforce. Dana White confirmed the news with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani. The biggest MMA story of the year has a lot of implications on the future of mixed martial arts and could have a particularly big impact on the currently very competitive heavyweight division. Dana White insisted that it will be “business as usual” for Strikeforce and the UFC, adding that the fighters who are currently in Strikeforce will not become “UFC” fighters. Scott Coker will remain on board and continue to run Strikeforce as if it was its own, separate entity. White made sure to drive home the fact that Coker will be the man in charge of running the shows on Showtime, dealing with co-promoters like M-1 Global, and talent-shares with K-1. Of course, Zuffa has experience running two promotions at once as they had been doing so with the UFC and WEC since 2006 before merging the two promotions as we moved into 2011. Although Dana White can be controversial at times, we do have to take him at face value at this point when he asserts that Strikeforce will continue to function as its own organization. There really isn’t any reason to shut down Strikeforce or even slow down their expansion. But one has to wonder if this deal will affect the long-term outlook for the MMA world, particularly the heavyweight division. No one questions that the UFC dominates the talent pool at practically every weight class, often ranking eight or more of their fighters within the world’s top 10. But Strikeforce has put together a heavyweight division that actually can make a claim that it truly contends with the UFC’s. Dana added that free agent fighters will sign contracts with either Strikeforce or the UFC—and not both. This leads to the obvious assumption that the top fighters will be pushed toward the UFC while Strikeforce is left to pick from the remaining scraps. “We need more fighters,” Dana White said when asked why the decision was made to acquire Strikeforce, “We need to put on more fights.” That comment alone should tell us that Zuffa made this move, at least partially, in an effort to acquire Strikeforce’s heavyweight division. Strikeforce’s heavyweight division is really the only one in which they contended with the UFC, top-to-bottom. There is talent at other divisions but Dana White and the Fertitta brothers are smart enough businessmen to understand that putting on the “dream fights” within the heavyweight division is what fans have been asking for. Who doesn’t want to see the heavyweight championship showdown between Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez? Or the long-awaited bout between Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko? Or a “Goliath versus Goliath” fight featuring Brock Lesnar and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva? At the end of the day, this move was made in an effort to make more money. The best way to make more money is by putting on the big-name, dream fights that fans will buy pay per views to see. According to Dana White, we won’t see these fights until the Strikeforce fighters’ contracts are up. If this is true, though, look for the UFC to immediately sign the biggest Strikeforce fighters to new contracts when their existing ones run out. It will be extremely surprising if any of the big-name fighters decide to stick around with Strikeforce. Like it or not, this is a smart business move for the UFC and it will have major ramifications on the entire sport. It remains to be seen how things will play out, but we have taken a giant step forward toward seeing some of the heavyweight showdowns we have been begging for.

Basically they can't just merge at this point because of contracts (TV deals being the biggest ones, but also fighter contracts and the M-1 co-promotional deal that I'm sure Dana White doesn't want a damn thing to do with).
Once Strikeforce burns through the remainder of its existing deals, I'm sure it will fold into the UFC and they'll re-sign the best of the Strikeforce guys to UFC deals. What I'm sure they DON'T want to do is simply assume all of Strikeforce's existing contacts into the UFC -- again, the M-1 deal can't just be swept under the rug, and Dana certainly doesn't want M-1 within a hundred miles of co-promoting a UFC event.
Keeping them separate for now allows them to honor the existing deals (and therefore avoid lawsuits) while not letting those deals clutter up the UFC business model. The downside is we might have to wait on things like Diaz vs. GSP or other such fights, because if Showtime has the rights to a certain number of Strikeforce events, they're certainly entitled to a good-faith effort on Zuffa's part to put halfway decent shows together, which means they'd have to continue booking the better talent on Showtime for a while.
Either way, this is a major game changer. I was sure this day would come, but I honestly didn't think now was the time.

Daley is an idiot. He probably knows at this point Strikeforce's time is ticking, and once his contract is done, or the merger happens down the road, he's history. May as well make some money out of it until then.
Either way huge news. I was shocked when I first read it. Did not see it coming.

Paul Daley is threatening to pull out of his Nick Diaz because of the buyout. He just wants to quit and save face before Dana inevitably sends him packing back to BAMMA. Nothing wrong with BAMMA, but that will be his greatest means of exposure at that point.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was a Fedor Jakks figure. That would be awesome... maybe Hendo too? We could even have a whole new sub-set of "Strikeforce" fighters (similar to the Pride and WEC figures) like Overeem, King Mo, Diaz, Melendez etc.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was a Fedor Jakks figure. Yup! Or at least for Round 5 to release their Fedor. I've gotta take my Carano and Hendo figures out of storage now...LOL!

Paul Daley is threatening to pull out of his Nick Diaz because of the buyout. Good, let him walk. If he wants to pull amateur sh*t like this, let him go. I'm sure Dana White would say the same thing too.

I honestly didn't see this coming. I hope we get to see Hendo back in the octagon again, especially since his last appearance in the UFC was a win.

Or Dana could just bite the ing bullet, lift the lifetime UFC ban bullsh*t on him, and stop acting like a prick, where Daley is concerned.

Just listened to a Dana White video with Helwani. UFC will honor all contracts, including there deal with Showtime for the at the top of his head 2 years he thinks. Then who knows what happens. They plan on growing the brand in that time, advertising on UFC shows for Strikeforce. And the two promotions will run as normal. If a Strikforce contract expires, UFC can pick them up, same as a UFC to Strikeforce, business as normal.

How is Dana being a prick? Daley decided to cheap shot Koscheck after that fight for s sake! He deserves to be barred for his idiocy. All I know is I hope for a merger somewhere down the line this year or in 2012

Or Dana could just bite the ing bullet, lift the lifetime UFC ban bullsh*t on him, and stop acting like a prick, where Daley is concerned. As much as I like Daley, he deserves the heat he's getting for right now. Dana put him on a clean line to the title, and Daley turns around and tries to sucker punch a guy on ppv after losing. Daley is the prick in this situation and doesn't deserve a clean pass back into the company. Should he banned for life? No. As dumb as his actions were, nobody was hurt and he's still a good fighter. He should be allowed to earn his way back into the company eventually, but until then he deserves the punishment he got. I'm sure if he beats Diaz, gets a few wins, and can manage to make weight(!) during all of that, Dana would be open to letting him into the UFC. At the end of the day, if Dana can get the best fighters on his programs, he's likely gonna do it.
