So, after all the Sting talk and rumors have cooled, I ask this one question...
Would you consider Sting to be one of the greatest of all time? Explain your answer.
Sting is probably on my top 10 list of all time favorite wrestlers especially when I was growing up. Although he is one of my favorites, I honestly do not believe he can be lumped into the same category as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Steve Austin, and whoever else you can probably think of.
Main reason being is that despite having an enormous following and being a main event player, Sting never really reached that pinnacle of success like Hogan or Flair have (in my opinion, anyway). His matches with anyone other than Ric Flair in his early WCW years were rather boring. Flair obviously elevated Sting's career by going to a 1 hour draw at 1988 Clash of the Champions. Sure, he has had six WCW World Heavyweight Championship reigns including a bunch of other title reigns in NWA and WCW but to me, to call a wrestler the greatest of all time, they need to be involved in one of those matches that you could watch over and over because of the excitement and emotion involved. Sting has had maybe one or two of those types of matches, one being Hulk Hogan at Starrcade 1997 and we all know how that match turned out.
This is not a bash Sting topic, because like I said, he is one of my all time favorites but I just don't feel like he is on the level of Hogan, Flair, Rock, Austin, etc in terms of being able to carry the load as the top guy in the company. Not the champion, the TOP GUY, because let's face it... The Miz is not the top guy of the WWE (not yet, anyway) but, he holds the title.

Sting would be in the same boat as Hogan and Flair had he gone to WWE after WCW was bought out. But, he stuck to his word for all these years when he said he would NEVER go to WWE. That is the only thing holding this man back. In his prime he gave us some of the greatest matches in wrestling history. With guys like Flair, Muta, and Hogan. I just wish he had joined WWE. Im a huge TNA fan, But, Imagining the feuds he could have given us, WOW, what a big deal we missed out on. Sting-Jericho , Sting - Rock..... But back to the topic, Sting, In my opinion is the 3rd greatest wrestler today. With Flair and Hogan in front of the line.

I definitely can't put him in the top 10. He was never the company centerpiece, even when he had the title. He was always better in a chase-the-belt scenario than as champ.
He was a big draw and a certified main eventer but not Top 10 all-time. However, he'd be in the top 25.

He had great matches in Japan. When I think of WCW I think of Sting. Sure hes not the best wrestler in the world but Id rather watch a Sting match than a Hogan match. And in the mid 1990s He was a big star just as big as Hogan in WCW. I love Sting!

Sting was hugely over, was the face of the company for many years (even without needing the title) and also put on some of the most memorable matches. He's without a doubt one of the top 10 wrestlers of all time and certainly a first ballot hall of famer if there was an actual Hall of Fame worth mentioning lol

I would definitely say he's one of the greatest of all time. When I think of Sting I always think of his "Surfer Sting" days and he was just unbelievably over at the time. Growing up I was always a Little Warrior when watching the WWF and a Little Stinger when watching WCW. I'd throw him somewhere in my Top 10 alongside Hogan, Flair, Savage, Hart, Michaels, Austin, The Rock, Warrior, and Luger

He is the greatest U.S wrestler never to work for Vince McMahon/WWE.

He's undoubtedly one of the greatest of all time. He still has it too, and it must be pretty amazing to say that he's reached legendary status in the US without working for Vince McMahon or WWE.

I'm a HUGE sting mark - but more for his "surfer" gimmick than this god-awful "crow" gimmick he's been pushing for the last 2 decades. Anyways, he's easily in my top ten favourites of all time. Yes he's not the most technically sound wrestler, even in his prime, but he was so charismatic and his matches were so emotionally-charged.
He's known as the franchise of NWA/WCW and had a look that was completely marketable. Sting brought himself to legendary status in this business without working for Vince or having the WWE Marketing machine behind him - that's a HUGE accomplishment.
If Vince ever offered him a HOF spot, I hope he accepts because he is a true legend in the sport. Now he's older, slower, and maybe a bit jaded, but I'll always have fond memories of being a little Stinger and cheering for my hero.

When I think of WCW, the first thing that comes to mind is Sting. I also loved the surfer gimmick but only saw it for a brief time in the mid 90's as I began truly getting into wrestling a little while before the Bash at the Beach. The guy has always been over and had unbelievable charisma. Like others have mentioned, not the most techinically sound but that didn't matter.
Just curious for anyone who has met the Stinger. Why do you think it is that he's so outgoing on the show and yet he is so shy in person. Just a little odd to me I don't know.

I'm wouldn't even put him in the top 25 even if we were talking America-only talent.

There are people who have an easier time giving a speech than holding a one-on-one conversation. Over the years, I've heard a surprising number of celebs describe themselves as introverts.

Sting is in my top 10 as well. I first got into WCW when Sting just got into his "crow" gimmick, when I was a kid. That is what got me hooked on that product.
Much like Taker was my favorite in WWE, Sting grew to be my favorite in WCW. I was just captivated when he was on the screen. He was/is one hell of a performer.

I'd consider sting to be the best wrestler who never competed in wwe, but I wouldn't put him in the top ten or anything, maybe top 40.

In the late 80's/early 90's Luger was definitely HUGE tho; there's no denying that

Honestly, I think I could name around 49 wrestlers better then Sting off of the top of my head. I think just for his fan following and overall persona Sting would rank barely in my top 50 of most entertaining wrestlers of all-time.
