Did Austin actually pass out during the I Quit match, or was it a work?

was a work - but a very good one as it showcased Austin's "never quit/die hard/tough guy" attitude that the fans got a taste of. As a consequence of that match, he gained much more credibility with the fans who also began to take a helluva lot more notice of him.
I guess you could say that match/work was a huge stepping stone for him.
