recently read about this and I'm personally thrilled. I'm guessing this is part of a way to attract new fans that have become part of the comic culture now that it has become mainstream. I used to read comics religiously when I was like 10 (I'm 19 now), problem is, where to start? The only superhero stuff I've read recently has been Blackest Night and a bit of Batman and Green Arrow. This is the perfect excuse to get back into DC and comics in general.
what will I be reading? My 3 favourite superheroes; Green Arrow, Batman and Green Lantern (depending on who's the central character) are a dead cert. possibly Flash, possibly New Guardians (love me some Kyle Rayner). so yeah, from a n00b's perspective, i'm damn glad about this!

anyone get the feeling that this is temporary? like maybe a few months then it will shift back? Only reason to justify some of the changes like some of the horrible 90's costume redesigns

The numbering would be less confusing if they did a full reboot and started over at #1. Keeping the same continuity and changing the numbering is what is confusing.

anyone get the feeling that this is temporary? like maybe a few months then it will shift back? Only reason to justify some of the changes like some of the horrible 90's costume redesigns It all depends on the sales figures. If paper and digital copy numbers add up to the same readership then the re-design is in part a failure as the whole thing is to attract new readers and bring back old casual readers. Any changes to the DCnU from there will be made due to reader complaints. The only factor that is immediately important is what the split is on the paper to digital sales. The guy that runs the local comic shop was told the price was likely to go up post reboot, when it didn't he called Diamond to find out why he was told it likely would. He was told it is still a possibility, all depending on how many people still read a paper copy of the comic over the digital. Right now DC is more concerned with finding out where the butter zone is for the sales split, and if there even will be one. After that the readership numbers come in, after that comes the adjustments to try and increase numbers. I hope this doesn't turn into Heroes Reborn, I also hope this doesn't become watered down like the comic movie-verses.

The funny thing about new readers wanting to read Batman and Lantern and thinking this is a good jumping on point, is that those are the two with the most continuity left untouched.

I'm excited for this mainly because I'm a trade buyer. I'll wait 4 months, drop $200 on gns, and be happy. I consider myself a crappy comic fan because I never keep up, and this reboot may help me.

Also I haven't read a lot of stuff with Black Adam but I always found him to be a cool character and would totally read a book just about him if it had a good creative team.

No, I don't think everyone I listed is going to be getting a reboot, or at least not ATM. But if they did, I would be interested. I just listed all my favorite characters that I would be interested in.

I hope this doesn't turn into Heroes Reborn, I also hope this doesn't become watered down like the comic movie-verses. If the goal is to bring back older, casual readers like myself then they need to do a reboot, not a re-packaging which is what this feels like to me. It feels like they're going to keep their current convoluted continuity (which is a great band name btw) and just re-package things. Marvel kind of sucked me in with their Ultimate line though I admit I haven't read any of their stuff in some time. It was basically a complete reboot and re-telling of stories I read as a kid. I never really formed any connections with any of the Marvel characters. Superman will continue to be a favorite of mine though. If DC really wants to suck me in then this is what they must do: 1. Complete reboot. Re-design the costumes/characters if you want. No problem with that. Start from scratch. A space ship lands in KS with a small infant on board. A socialite couple is killed in crime alley. A police scientist is doused in chemicals after a lightning strike. A test pilot encounters a dying alien. Start from there. 2. Go digital with a subscription model. Charge me $20-30 a month to view digital copies of all the new stuff. Make an app that does this as well as a web access. 3. Charge an additional fee for access to archived stuff. This could be everything from last week's stuff to 10-30 year old stuff. DC has this huge library of old stuff that people would love to read. I can download it illegally off the web which they make no money off of. I can buy the stuff at comic shops which they make no money off of. Or I can view it digitally directly from DC which they make money off of and I'm happy to pay them for it.

I never really formed any connections with any of the Marvel characters. Superman will continue to be a favorite of mine though. Funny thing about the Ultimate line, Marvel killed 85% of the main characters including the biggest name X-Men characters. They gave a host of reasons for why. I agree about a complete reboot which is kind of what worries me about this one. If it was 100% clean slate I could get behind it, but some of the creative teams are saying they are using the previous continuity and stories, others are saying they are just tweaking things. DC seems to be afraid to just start over. I get my comics in pdf form now thanks to a deal I have and if they offered a subscription plan I agree it would help. I feel DC is still trying to figure out how to make the digital end of things work. DC has said in the past they want to make an online digital archive but making it work, with the creators royalties and figuring out how to run it was to much. I hope they figure out how to make it work, I have 100GB of comics on DVDs and 50Gb on my computer so having a way to access all that without finding the right disk would be awesome.

I have about 300 gb of comics on my HDD. Like my music collection, some of it is legit and some is not. I'd happily pay a monthly fee to be able to read from an online archive. I'm just shocked that DC hasn't done this yet. They have this huge archive of content sitting there. They have a client base that would be willing to pay for it. Just get it done. They're leaving money on the table by not doing it.

Well, they have been trying to please the brick and mortar comic stores by not killing their back issue business. Brick and mortar stores are mostly all dead in the water, and the best ones usually just break even, or they make money specializing in other merchandise.

Brick and mortar stores are mostly all dead in the water, and the best ones usually just break even, or they make money specializing in other merchandise. Yeah, but let's be honest here. The brick and mortar model of doing business is dieing. The comic book industry has always been a kind of niche industry. In this economy niche industries are suffering. Not to mention everything has been moving to digital for years. Music, books, news, etc.... is all digital nowadays. The local record store is basically dead. Amazon has killed a lot of mom and pop stores and Barnes and Noble is now cannibalizing it's own brick and mortar business with it's online business. Comics are really no different. Digital offers more availability and higher profit margins. There's demand for it and with iPads and Android tablets running around, there's now a mobile market for it. If you don't put your stuff out there, someone else will. There's a ton of pirating being done on old stuff for the simple reason that you cannot buy it legally in digital format. When people cannot legally buy your content, they're going to pirate it and that's going to cut into brick and mortar stores as well.

It just always bugs me when companies fail to acknowledge the digital nature of their content and then bitch about people pirating their stuff while failing to provide a legit alternative. The conversation seems to go:
Consumer: We want XYZ in digital format. We're willing to pay you for it. Company: No. We're only going to provide analog. Consumer: Fine. XYZ torrent site has digital copies I'll just go there. Company: How dare you pirate our content!!!!!!!!! For shame!!!! You're taking food out of our mouths here!!! Our children will starve!!!! You must stop now!!! Consumer: Ok. Just give us a digital copy of your content. We've established that there's a market for it. We are willing to pay for it. Just make it available. Company: Ha!! Like that's going to happen.

I would like to know if there will be digital editions of the collected editions, or if the book stores still have enough pull to stop that. When I try a new book I usually wait for a complete story ark to be collected so I can see the full workings of a creative team and character mythology. I hope they start publishing all of their material in a digital format.

From the most recent Invincible: I don't know if this was actually needed in the comic but it was pretty funny.
