curious what others opinions are on this....
who would you consider to be the most "over" wrestlers in the history of the business....so far?
love them or hate them,they always got a crowd buzzing,always kept people's interest,helped with buyrates and ratings,and just their being in a feud or a program could help get their opponents over...
my choices:
Hulk Hogan - of course....the most popular wrestler possibly of all time ,and he WAS wrestling to mainstream America (and the world) in the mid-80's - early 90's...along with Vince helped pioneer PPV events by bringing in hiuge buyrates...and,of course,if you wrestled him you were always in the main event...even when his WWF act got stale,he jumped to WCW and revitalized his career for 2 years,and when THAT went stale too,he reinvented himslef as an Ultimate Heel who was only in it for the money....and his WWE return was an incredible reaction....he was STILL over!
Ric Flair - was WRESTLING in the 80's and early 90's for those who didn't care about Donald Trump and hollywood stars....had such heat, ANYBODY who faced him was considered a star,even if they didn't have a chance of winning,he always made them look good.... his promo's were always the best in the business ,and as late as 2008 he was STILL over with the WWE fans!
Undertaker - right out of the gate,was pretty much over...even if people loved him or booed him,they were absolutely fascinated by this character,the likes of which people had never seen before! dead bodies,coffins,embalming? this was all new stuff to a WWF that force fed it's steady stream of superhero characters...as time went on,of course,his legend only grew,and his aura created a superstar that might not have an equal in WWF/WWE history, someone who has been over for almost 20 years straight,even to this day.... he was so over,he didn't even NEED to win titles for almost the entire first half of his career...only 3 World Titles in his first 10 years with the WWF...
Steve Austin - defined the renegade 90's Attitude Era....i don't think any wrestler ever burned hotter than Stone Cold for the years he was on top....slap his name on anything,and it sold like crazy.... also helped beer companies gain a huge profit in the 90's (LOL!) .... i mean,Jesus Christ, athletes from other sports were wearing the Austin 3:16 shirt!!! he was so hot,his feud with Vince McMahon helped pull the trigger that fired the bullet that hit WCW in the heart,and started it's slow death...
Sting - initially,a good wrestler,somewhat over in the "hero face" type of way....but once Hogan and co. came to WCW,he was pushed aside like yesterday's news,and seemed doomed to inhabit the midcard....then something funny happened - he turned his back on WCW,and became the hottest face in the company....his merchandise was only outsold by the nWO....he was SO hot in 1996 - 1997 ,that he literally didn't wrestle a match in that time - not one! - nor speak,and was still watrched intently on every show he appeared on....
