I mostly always start on normal or whatever word/phrase the developers choose to represent "normal." However, with first person shooters I usually set it one above normal, if I don't, I'll breeze through the game like it's nothing. Since Halo 2 I've always started Halo on Heroic. I don't think I've started a game on easy since my N64 days playing Turok, lol.
This guy I know (unfortunately) always plays on very easy. It doesn't matter what game, how long he's played it, or how many times he has beat it. It's always on the easiest difficulty. It was so obnoxious when my friends and I would go over to his place and we had to play Gears of War 2 Horde mode on the easiest setting.

I like playing alot of story heavy games (Mass Effect, Bioshock ect) so i put it on easy, cos i wanna experience a story, and having 5/10 extra enemies isnt gonna help that

If the developers have a preference (like Bungie with Heroic), I'll usually start with that. However, I have absolutely zero qualms about dropping it down to Easy/Casual/etc. as soon as I run into problems.
Even when a game is challenging, I don't get much joy out of the triumph of overcoming a game, at least while playing singleplayer. I'd much rather enjoy the majority of the content.
When I play co-op/horde/etc, I typically won't go above Normal/Developer Suggestion (unless I can trust the person I'm playing with to be able to pick up my slack whenever I'm not playing my best). For me, it's infinitely more fun struggling to win (or even just having some difficulty) when playing with friends.

I'm old and cranky and just want to play the game, so I hardly ever touch difficulties above normal/medium unless it's like a puzzle game or a rhythm game. I like easy. I like just kind of playing through the game, especially story heavy games.

I usually start on Normal. Last game I started was Uncharted 2, and that was - by default - on Normal when I chose New Game. So I stuck with that. It's not too hard, but it's not super easy where I can blow right through it. A great game, might I add. If you have a PS3 and somehow haven't played this yet, you should. Nah, you NEED to.

I would start on Normal, because thats what it is 'Normal' nothing enhanced and nothing too over the top. But once you start to go to medium, hard ect. thats when the A.I goes a bit crazy and where you have to watch out for the littlest things.

On RPG games and story-based games I usually put in on normal my first run, and if I enjoyed it a lot, set it to the next level and replay the game. For sports games, however, I usually set the difficulty a little below the most difficult.

I always play on easy and still get killed a few times while playing most games. I have a bad habit of rushing into a room or area before checking it out, running into a big fight..

Always on whatever the mid setting is, to judge how much I need to increase the difficulty (if at all.) Depends on the game too. F1 2010 has a gradual learning curve so I started on easy to learn the driving aspects, currently on the 2nd from top difficulty. With Guitar Hero I'm not comfortable using the orange button (it's not fun for me) so I stick at medium there. And with FIFA and WWE games it's at professional/hard (sometimes legendary) as I've been playing them for so long.

If it's from a game series I'm familiar with then I might try one above Normal but any new game I always start on the "medium" difficulty. Only game I've played at the highest setting was Mass Effect's Insanity. I only try harder difficulty when you can new game+ and carry over your previous items/upgrades.

I suck at games, so I almost always play on easy.

It depends on the game. If it's something like the new SmackDown! game or a new Rock Band one, I'll start on the hardest difficulty since that's what I'd play on in past games. If it's a completely new game that I've never played before and don't know what to expect, I'll go with normal.

The hardest difficulty if it doesn't need to be unlocked. If it does then I will play the next lowest and then play the hardest once it is unlocked.

I'll be honest, I always play it on Easy just to get used to the game, then challenge myself by doing the other difficulties afterwards. Most games though I will start on Normal difficulty (Alan Wake is an example, as that only has Normal, Hard and Nightmare options).

Just normal. Only in the instance that I really LOVE a game, and feel like playing through it again, do I brave the hardest difficulties. Reall the Halo games are the only ones I have bothered doing that with.

It all depends on the type of game for me. With sports games I normally start on difficult as they're want I spend most of my time playing and I'm generally not too bad at them. Most others I start on the default difficulty, but if it's something completely new to me I start on the easiest setting possibly (and most of the time, stay there) ;D
