Hioki is already ranked as number 2 or 3 in the world at featherweight, and is one of the few Japanese fighters who have a legit black belt in BJJ.
I expect him to do well against Roop.

Japanese top contenders moving into the UFC don't exactly have the greatest track record. Takanori Gomi lost his debut, Kid Yamamoto lost his debut, Akiyama BARELY won his debut and Mizugaki lost his debut too. I'm hoping that the Japanese curse doesn't hit Hioki cause I would LOVE to see a fight between him and Aldo and if he can get past Roop then I'm sure he'll get one soon after.

Hioki dominated and submitted Hominick, and pretty much owned Marlon Sandro in every aspect of the game. Now that he's training in Montreal with GSP and the rest of the Tri-Star Gym, I think he'll do well.

It's tough because most of the Japanese fighters have been miserable against top Americans.

It should be interesting... I'd expect him to beat Roop, but after the recent run of Japanese fighters debuting in the UFC, nothing's for certain.

So long as he can get matched up with the right fights, I think he'll do well. Definitely good to see more international blood into the mix.

Japanese fighters have been miserable against top Americans. but he's fighting Roop I hope he doesn't get hit by the Japanese UFC curse. I'd love to see him do well in the UFC. Chael may be right about Japanese MMA though.
