It appears Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn are on a collision course for a bout in October.
The power of social networking was at work on Monday with messages being exchanged back and forth between Condit, Penn and fellow top ten welterweight Jon Fitch.
When it was all said and done Condit issued a challenge to Penn, and he promptly accepted and now the UFC is on board as well.
“The people have spoken,” wrote Condit in a message to Penn. “They want to see us scrap, let’s give em’ what they asked for.”
It didn’t take long for Penn to answer back.
“Yup, let’s do it October 29th,” Penn said.
Now this is a fight the UFC is getting behind because they are in the process of working out a date and time for Condit and Penn to face each other.
Speaking to MMAWeekly.com on Monday, Condit’s manager Malki Kawa of First Round Management said that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva is in the process working out a fight between the two welterweight contenders.
While both fighters and the UFC are targeting a date in October, the event remains to be determined.
“The fight is going to happen, but this is a main event fight,” Kawa stated. “The UFC might have something planned, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Sources have indicated to MMAWeekly.com that the UFC may be working on a 3rd event in October, somewhere between the two shows currently on the schedule already.
Right now the UFC has plans for UFC 136 on October 8 in Houston, Tex. as well as UFC 137 on October 29 in Las Vegas with Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz headlining.
While no main event has been confirmed for the Houston show, all signs are pointing towards the lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard leading the way.
UFC 137 has the main event fight between St-Pierre and Diaz, but no co-main event fight at this time.
If there is a third event in October, it’s currently not on the books with the UFC, but a UFC Fight Night show or something else could be possible.
The hardest part is over however and Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn appear headed for a fight later this year. MMAWeekly.com will have more information on the date and location when it becomes available.

Hopefully it happens. If so, it'll be with Diaz vs. GSP and Hioki vs. Roop and I'll be there live.

If this happens at UFC 137 then that event would be worth getting even if they only have those 3 fights ALONE!! Gonne be great!

I can't wait for this fight! This is gonna be a huge test for Condit, and I hope he's successful.
And if this really does take place at UFC 137, this will be one of the best cards ever.

Condit should've waited for the winner of Diaz and GSP... this is a BS fight.. even more so if this is a title fight elimnator...
Penn lost two fights to Edgar... beat Hughes and went to a draw with Fitch...
Mean while Condit has ended the undefeated streaks of two fighters...

I LOVE Condit, but no way he gets through a motivated BJ Penn. and what are the odds of BJ showing up motivated? Shall we review the Edgar fights, as well as round 3 of the Fitch wrestling match? That's 3 of his last 4 fights. Well personally, I think he beat Edgar the first time. But true, he just seemed to sleepwalk through their second fight... and for the Fitch fight, his strategy was bit off - I think he should have kept it standing... he could have easily outboxed Fitch. I really hope BJ wins this - impressively too... he's still one of my favorite fighters. |

As someone's explained to you before...Condit is yet to be be truly tested. He beats Dong Hyun Kim so he get's a crack at GSP? The same GSP who's one of the most dangerous fighters of all time? No. |

Again.. he gave two good fighters their first loss... and beat Hardy as well.. not to mention Ellenberger... How has he not been tested? .. Macdonald would have won that fight had it not been stopped.
If anything he should have faced Fitch rather than Penn.. That could have been a title eliminator.

In the same night. And numerous others. And by your logic(which is completely incorrect but I'm just making a point to you)...when Condit beat Dan, Hardy was coming of a loss to GSP. So he was at the bottom, remember? The same way KOS is at the bottom now? This isn't a new concept in MMA, especially in these weight classes. Sometimes guys get hot-shotted to a title match(Anderson, Lesnar) and other times they have to work and work for it(Bones, Fitch, Edgar Maynard). If you wanna throw Condit's name in the top 3 mix, call me when he beats a current top WW. |

Condit is the real deal. Like it or not, Hardy was ranked in the upper echelon of WW fighters even after GSP beat him, and Condit knocked him the out. Something GSP didn't even try to do. BJ will always be considered one of the best, so this fight with Condit vs. Penn is a great way for Condit to get even more recondition. |

I think that would mean he's on top. Say what you will about Round 3 in the fight, but that was NOT a 10-8 round. BJ won the first 2 clearly. |
