All three are essentials but start with Year One.

Year One is the true starting point and widely considered the best, however I enjoy Long Halloween far more.

Came to this impasse myself a few months ago when I started reading Batman and chose Year One to start with.

My vote goes to The Long Halloween as it is one of my favorite Batman stories, but I've heard Year One is a great starting piece for a Batman collection. I have yet to read it but I'll get around to it someday.

Long Halloween is a good story, but Tim Sale's art almost kills it for me.

IMO, The Long Halloween is the greatest graphic novel ever. I could read that book a million times and never get sick of it. If you can though, try and get both Year One and Long Halloween.

My first one was "The Dark Knight Returns." I only got "Year One" about a year or so ago. They're both great.
If you're looking for a lot of Batman characters and some great art, I would also say you should look into "Hush." It's the story that got me back into Batman comics for a long time.

Long Halloween is a good story, but Tim Sale's art almost kills it for me. I gotta agree with you on that one. That artwork is some of the worst I've seen in a graphic novel. Hideous. BTW, I forgot to mention anything on the Killing Joke. I got it because apparently it was one of the best Batman graphic novels out there, and I was honestly let down. I just didn't see what all the fuss was about.

Good friends birthday is coming up, only batman graphic novel he has is The Killing Joke. I'm gonna get him Year One and another one but I dunno what to get, Long Halloween is quite pricey on Amazon for some reason. Any other recommendations?

To me the the art is stiff and overly stylized, but I also like it for the story. I shudder to think how bad the story would have looked with something like Jim Lee's overly dramatic/action style. As much as I liked Long Halloween, I did not care for Dark Victory.

Really good stuff if you ask me.

I'll throw out a bit of a random pick and suggest basically one of the best Elseworlds stories ever, and one that IGN actually ranked as one of the best Batman stories ever: the "Batman & Dracula" trilogy.
Don't want to spoil much, but I will say that it's written very well, the art is very gothic and looks great, and while it's definitely THE most violent Batman comic you'll ever see, it's definitely one of the best.
You can pick up the TPB as "Tales of the Multiverse - Batman: Vampire".
