Austrian driver's religious headgear strains credulity Driving licence of Niko Alm Having received his driving licence, Niko Alm now wants to get pastafarianism officially recognised Continue reading the main story Related Stories * School defends intelligent design * 'Intelligent design' teaching ban An Austrian atheist has won the right to be shown on his driving-licence photo wearing a pasta strainer as "religious headgear". Niko Alm first applied for the licence three years ago after reading that headgear was allowed in official pictures only for confessional reasons. Mr Alm said the sieve was a requirement of his religion, pastafarianism. Later a police spokesman explained that the licence was issued because Mr Alm's face was fully visible in the photo. "The photo was not approved on religious grounds. The only criterion for photos in driving licence applications is that the whole face must be visible," said Manfred Reinthaler, a police spokesman in Vienna. He was speaking on Wednesday, after Austrian media had first reported Mr Alm's reason for wearing the pasta strainer. After receiving his application the Austrian authorities had required him to obtain a doctor's certificate that he was "psychologically fit" to drive. According to Mr Reinthaler, "the licence has been ready since October 2009 - it was not collected, that's all there is to it". The idea came into Mr Alm's noodle three years ago as a way of making a serious, if ironic, point. A self-confessed atheist, Mr Alm says he belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a light-hearted, US-based faith whose members call themselves pastafarians. Passport photos of Niko Alm with a colander on his head A medical interview established the self-styled "pastafarian" was mentally fit to drive The group's website states that "the only dogma allowed in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is the rejection of dogma". In response to pressure for American schools to teach the theory known as intelligent design, which some Christians favour as an alternative to natural selection, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster wrote to the Kansas School Board asking for the pastafarian version of intelligent design to be taught to schoolchildren. Straining credulity In the same spirit, Mr Alm's pastafarian-style application for a driving licence was a response to the Austrian recognition of confessional headgear in official photographs. The licence took three years to come through and, according to Mr Alm, he was asked to submit to a medical interview to check on his mental fitness to drive but - straining credulity - his efforts have finally paid off. It is the police who issue driving licences in Austria, and they have duly issued a laminated card showing Mr Alm in his unorthodox item of religious headgear. When asked for his reaction to Mr Reinthaler's comments, Mr Alm told the broadcaster ORF: "I didn't know I was guilty of not collecting it. That doesn't alter the fact that it still took nearly a year [to be issued]". The next step, Mr Alm told the Austrian news agency APA, is to apply to the Austrian authorities for pastafarianism to become an officially recognised faith. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14135523

Your pretty ignorant all in your own statement so take some rebuttal ignorance. Some people take being a pastafarian seriously. Your in return stating his religion is a joke because it was founded based off ideas on the internet when in reality you precious catholicism was founded out of some book with no factual credibility that could possibly be the biggest joke of all time (writer laughing in his grave that his story has developed a cult following). Neither has any credibility at all. You also cant be ing arrested for mocking a religion, your seriously delusional if you think that way. I'm sure you believe in the virgin mary, a woman who didnt have sex and had no artificial insemination, deffinetly not a hermaphrodite (because your church murdered them for being un-natural) yet produced a magic baby with super powers with negative immunity to spears, thorns, nails, and sun. Well in reality that is pretty much about as believable as saying a flying pasta monster is going to poop bread sticks and feed the world enough to end starvation. You cant prove it and neither can a pastafarian, but its everyones choice to believe what they want as obscure and intellectually- disabled as all religions may be.

MAJOR FLAW in your idealism...the fact that he wants it registered as a religion dictates faith and belief in something. Now, in the article, it was stated on their internet page that the group was an atheist group based in NON-belief, which would in turn make it not a religion.

Not every catholic believes in their religion, according to the bible only 30,000 are true believers and will be saved. Its the same thing, you can register yourself as something, but it doesent make you a believer.

I think the spaghetti monster thing is ridiculous. I know it's supposed to be showing absurdity but it's still ridiculous.
That being said, if that's his religion why should we bother if he's not bothering anyone? If the Church of McMahon forced me to wear some WWE regalia then I'd do it.

If it was his RELIGION I would have no quarrel with this belief. I think my issue is taken with the fact that the group admits that its an atheist organized group meant to poke fun at absurdity and their stance is non-belief(which is a term they hold very clear)...if they honestly wanted it to be a religion and honestly thought that it is truth in that context of believing in such a thing and etc...I wouldnt care....I never too issue with beliefs of people or other religious choices. My best friend for many years was an atheist and I didnt get all bent out of shape about it. I just cant stand either side taking it to such extremes....I dont codone WBC and their picketing...or flagrant statements about people going to hell. And I wont respect this sort of thing....i dont know...blah
