Not much info has been released on this (understatement), but it's apparently not a sequel to DOOM 3 or a re-boot, hence the quotes on 4. But, In an interview during this year's E3, John Carmack said "as soon as Rage ships, the core tech team moves over to start making things happen on the Doom 4 project." So I would guess it will be released somtime between next year & 2013.
