Well they did warn him about it first. They're are all kinds of building and construction laws out there. Have been for years. We tore down our old shed to build a new one, on the same slab of concrete the old one was on, and we still had to get a building permit. Dad has owned that property since the 70s

Tyhe guy was warned twice and ignored the. I don't really see anything wrong here. Maybe jail was a bit much but he def. deserved the fines. They have these codes and rules for certain reasons.

Overlaying shingles is kind of dumb anyways. It's a lazy ass way of repairing your roof, unless you're just doing a few pieces or something.
I kind of wonder if the law is there so people don't do shoddy jobs. Maybe the idea is to cut down on insurance claims.
As far as doing what you want to your own home...when you buy a place, there's a giant stack of paperwork that is full of misc. details about what you can and can't do. Some neighborhoods have their own aesthetic guidelines that in some cases you have to pay annual fees for. There's all sorts of shit, but when sign your name to all that stuff, you're agreeing to adhere to the policies that have been put in place.

Why shouldn't he be allowed to do what he wants on his property? B/c there are laws and codes that need to be done and passed if you want to do it. If you remodel the outside of your house you need a permit, same with if you do your electrical boxes or build additions on your house. So the city knows you do it and then can make sure its done right so it creates less problems on the house and doesn't cause risks such as fire for electric and so on. And so in the future when this guy wants to sell it then know what was done to the house and when. People going to buy a house want to know the history of it, when the roof was put on, how many layers of roof are on,(in nj you can have more then one but only 2 i believe). People also wanna know that the stuff that was done was done right and inspected. |

Seems like another way for the city to get money from people for no good reason. I'm hoping the person knows what they are doing before they do it. If they don't know how to wire the electricity, I'd hope they wouldn't try to do it. |

Kliquid yeah if a good inspector is called in. My town had the inspector taking bribes for passing people for the stuff.
SLappy i guess you never watched HGTV. People do things that they don't know anything about ALL the time. Even contractors do crapwrong. I guess this guy didn't know what he was doing either though b/c they told him its not right to do 2 layers of shingles and he did it anyway.
