Kliquid yeah if a good inspector is called in. My town had the inspector taking bribes for passing people for the stuff. SLappy i guess you never watched HGTV. People do things that they don't know anything about ALL the time. Even contractors do poop wrong. I guess this guy didn't know what he was doing either though b/c they told him its not right to do 2 layers of shingles and he did it anyway. I have no interest in watching that. People do do stuff they know nothing about but that doesn't mean we need the city to come and make sure the person did it right or make sure the person got permission to do it first. I just do not believe the person needs to get permission if they are doing something on their own land.

Ok so a guy does his own electric we will say for the sake of argument. He doesn't do it right and the wires catch fire. Now the City has to come with their fire trucks to put out his mistake. They would rather cut down on that right from the start.

Exactly, things can happen even with a proper job so why not minimize it as much as possible and get it inspected and do it right? At least with the permit and proper job they know it was done right as the guy knew what he was doing as apposed to some random guy sticking wires together.

It's fine if he wants to pay to have someone come in and inspect it. The city shouldn't be in the business of telling people what they can and cannot do on their own land. Just because a 'proper job' is done does not mean there cannot be problems. Having a permit does not mean it would be done better than if there was no permit.
