Just wondering if anyone knows why they used the black bar-style cage for the Austin Vs. McMahon match at St. Valentine's Day Massacre 1999 as opposed to the chain-link cage we are more common to?

Exactly what I had figured, I just wasn't 100% sure.

That's the style cage that they were using around that time.
That's from about 3 months before the Vince/Austin match
EDIT: here's another from Summerslam 97
and from '98 I believe this was right after Wrestlemania XIV

They used the same style Black Cage at Rebellion 99 as well. IT wasn't just a one time thing. I don't think they even started to use to the steel cage until late 99 with X-Pac/Kane at Armageddon.

I love the old style cage. Way more....menacing and brutal than the fence link cage.
(P.S TNA failed at their own, it's RED for crying out loud, you can't even barely see what's going on)

Yeah the old-style cage (it was blue for a long time) was still being used. They just painted it black to update with the decor.
I still always have prefered this style versus the chain-link style.

as said they were still using that style.
now Im probably wrong but the first time I remember the steel mesh being used outside HIAC was HHH vs Rock in the summer of 99.
not saying it was the first time but its the first I remember.
the Rock vs Mankind vs Shamrock match at Breakdown 98 was big bar too.

I hate the old style cage. it looks so bad IMO. The new style is much more visually pleasing in my eyes.

I much prefer the old bar cages. Must be a generational thing
When I was first getting in to wrestling in 91 I remember seeing the WMII video in Asda and looking at the cage match images and thinking it was the most insane thing ever two men...locked in a cage to fight it out. Ahh to be a kid again

I swear there was a time when they used the chain link cage once before St. Valentine's Day Massacre but I can't remember when or why it was used. I just remember when a friend told me about the Austin/McMahon match the next day, I envisioned the chain link one since it had been used most recently. I was surprised when I saw the footage on Raw that night and it showed the black bar cage.
