Just like the title says, the WWE wasted RVD. Seriously, I don't understand why people say that he wasn't a draw or money maker. Nobody got bigger pops or had more merch and signs in the stands than RVD from late 2001-2002. This guy had the potential to be the #1 guy on Raw or SD, yet the WWE constantly had him jobbed out during his most popular years. For chris sakes, he was left off of WM19 and was thrown into a throw away tag match w/ Booker T at WM20. By the time he was finally given the WWE title in 2006, he had lost most of his momentum and just didn't seem to have the same passion as he did in his ECW and early WWE days. Had he been given a world title run earlier in his career, I think he would have cared more and wouldn't have been caught driving w/ pot that killed his title run.
Anyone else think RVD could have been THE MAN of the WWE had he been used right earlier in his career?

I don't think they fully trusted him to be "the man"

Fully agree, don't really know where it would have fit in though.

When WWE FINALLY gave him the chance he F***ed up so can't blame them, He was over in 01-03 but if RVD never screwed up i think he would still be in WWE today and would have been a credible main eventer, He would have taken time off around the time his wife had cancer but after that he could have had a few more World Title runs and would still be a top veteran today.

Yeah I really wished they would have jumped onto RVD earlier, but then again the Roster was so stacked after the ECW/WCW buyout that they had to make a few sacrifices, WWE still had The Rock and Austin at the time so they could play it safe with the Main-Eventers and still rake in a bucketload of money.
Though looking back, Triple H's World Title Runs were an absolute BUZZKILL on the Raw side of things, alot of good talent ( Including RVD ) just didn't get the opportunity that they should have, heck, It wouldn't have hurt to even just give RVD or even Booker T a small run to see what buzz they could get before handing it back to "Safeguard" Triple H.
But then again, RVD wasn't Vince's creation, and just like many other great talents, he was put on the backburner ( I still rage at seeing " Lifestyle Guru " DDP, what a discgrace ) .

Like I said, by the time they gave him the title he just didn't have the same passion for the business as he did earlier in his career. It wasn't until he had that half-shoot/half-scripted promo at ECW ONS 2005 that Vince finally gave him a chance. Had they given him a run when he actually cared about his work, I don't think he would have f***ed it up like he did. There is a huge differance in RVD's in-ring work and promos before he went to SD in 2004 and after he was drafted to the blue brand.

It was crazy how over he was back in 2001 still to this day I feel they should have had him won the triple threat and the title at No Mercy in 2001 even if he lost it back to Austin via screw job a few weeks later it could have really put him as a main eventer.

rob van dam could have easily been the next huge thing in wrestling. they ed up massively, he was naturally over. the match with hardy was a perfect start but from there on in it was bad news. he also should have beat lesnar at king of the ring.

2003 was the time for RVD to shine.
WM19:HHH vs RVD for the world title with RVD coming out on top.
unfortunately RVD hurt the beloved HHH in the EC and was branded careless and lazy for virtually the rest of his WWE career.bah.

Definitely agree. But RVD's been my favorite wrestlers for the majority of the time I've been watching. He's probably slipped to two or three on the all-time though.

i'm sure when he first came in that he injured a few opponents in the mid card so they wouldn't have wanted him facing the top talent too much!
also i think when he first appeared on WWF tv circa 1997 he had a bit of an attitude problem.
he was meant to lose on shotgun saturday by countout or DQ and refused to do it! i forget who his opponent was can anyone confirm this?

I don't get why everyone was so pissed he got busted. Have you not seen the man's ring attire? Hell he even had a move called 420 (with Rey). So him getting busted for f*cking pot was nothing. They blew that WAY out of proportion. It's not like he got busted with coke or meth, it was weed. I personally don't do drugs, nor do I smoke weed, but smoking weed is nothing. 90% of the people I know smoke it, it is the more acceptable thing to do so why everyone freaked out is beyond me. So what he was WWE/ECW champion at the time, look how long they let Kurt Angle get away with his pain killer abuse. Had it been John Cena, he wouldn't have even been given a slap on the wrist.

Taking a bit from previous posts......
RVD was not a vince creation, and wwe never full trusted him. Also when all the influx of talent from wcw and ecw came I think there was a lot of insecure guys/backstage politics going on in the locker room.
2002 he was red hot with the fans. But only flirted with the main event scene. Rock, Austin HHH, Undertaker, and Kurt Angle were clogging the main event at the time.
That said at least he had great matches/fueds with mid carders at the time like Eddie, Edge, Jericho, Hardy, etc

Dude got arrested for pot when he was the champion.
His mistake. Not WWE's.
RVD being wasted is what keep him from being "the guy".
It doesn't matter what your feelings are or how many of your friends do it or whether or not you do it...
RVD got busted in Ohio for marijuana. In Ohio, marijuana is ILLEGAL. Period. End of story.
Anytime your champion gets charged for something illegal...it's a big deal. Pot or not.

I agree w/ the poster who said getting busted w/ pot shouldn't have been that big of a deal. Seriously, if people did some damn research, they'd realize that Alcohol is much more dangerous than weed is. If Alchhol is legal, then there is no reason why weed shouldn't be. Like it was said, had it been Cena, nothing would have been done. The guys on steriods for christ sakes, yet never gets busted for it. Just look at how much bigger he got physically after the suposed drug-enforcement policy was put in, while 95% of the rest of the guys on the roster have majorly slimmed down.
Anyway, I hated the way they had him win the WWE title as well. The build up to his match w/ Cena was great, but the match turned out to be almost another typical Cena-squash match. Seriously, go back and watch the match, and you'll see that Cena dominated about 90% of the match. RVD had almost no offense for most of the match, and it took Edge spearing Cena for RVD to get the win. The match and win did nothing IMO to build RVD as a top guy.

agreed again C2016.
Edge interfering made the whole thing feel like another chapter in the Edge vs Cena program and not RVDs big moment.
