Professional wrestling is a sport because:
Definition of "Sport"
# an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition
# the occupation of athletes who compete for pay
Wrestlers compete. Maybe not in a way as in competing to beat one another in a wrestling contest, but they compete for popularity and so forth to work their way up the card to become noticeable and possible main eventers.
Wrestlers are among the most athletic of all sportsmen/athletes all over the world. They travel an unrivaled schedule, and they perfom 4 days a week, 5 on the week of a pay per view (Im using a WWE wrestlers schedule here).
Besides, from the early 00's WWE have been referring to their work as Sports Entertainment. Wrestling is the only sub-board in the Sports Entertainment category.
WWE performers are athletic, are showmen, and are performers.
Wrestling in general is viewed as a sport as it has existed before any other. Roman-Grecko wrestling being its origin to my best belief, but i could be incorrect.
Some television programs are considered Entertainment. Yet they do not entertain me. Its a matter of taste, and in the case of wrestling, a matter or respect.
"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively"
Pro-Wrestling has its rules and is a competitive engagement. Therefore Pro-Wrestling is a sport.
