This isn't who you think was the best champion per say, this is just who you like best. Yeah, I know that some of them were interim champ, but they're still in it.
Top 3 move on.

Who the is Maurice Smith? Seen of all of them but him. The guy that pretty much changed the whole landscape of MMA at his time, showing guys that you can have high-level striking and fight in something other than kickboxing. He showed that wrestlers weren't invincible, and showed that wrestlers' cardio wasn't up to the task of fighting for 15-20 mins with no breaks. His fight with Mark Coleman pretty much changed the perception on "ground and pound". Igor Vovchanchyn did the same sort of thing in PRIDE, but not too many people saw him then.

Wish I could of seen him in action, I searched him up and looked at his W/L record, hard to believe he was a champ'.

It was a different time back then. Everyone thought wrestlers were going to dominate the sport forever until he showed up.

Yeah, and the ranking structure we have today was rather non-existent. Guys were sort of just paired up to be paired up sometimes.
If I'm not mistaken, Smith captured 2 different HW titles in 2 different promotions in the span of about 4 fights, all while having a losing record. Pretty crazy when you compare it to today.
