Because he was over. That's the only thing that explains it. One would think that they would probably want to get some stars over by defeating him since they were moving on from characters like his, but instead we got a crappy match on WrestleMania.

Agreed with what was stated above.
Honestly, so much time and money was put into Ultimate Warrior (not to mention the guys who helped put him over such as Hogan, Andre, DiBiase, Savage, etc.) that I think Vince felt that he would give the whole Warrior "run" one more shot to at least break even and try to make something more out of what they actually got. Sadly, all they got was the same old Warrior.

I still think its because HBK wasnt putting butts in the seats. Taker-Mankind feud was much more interesting then anything HBK was doing and they they started building Austin as well. I think they needed some "star power" and since Hogan and Savage were no goes they went with Warrior.

Why did wwf want Ultimate Warrior back since not been there for 4 years? as he did not stay long you should get the Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior DVD.everything thats said about his 96 return is true...he didnt stay long because they sacked him AGAIN. as said above they wanted to get a star in.I still think they wanted to feed him to Vader or Sid as those were dream matches at the time. it was nothing to do with HBK.Warrior returned at WM12 and HBK won the belt at WM12.Zero to do with Michaels not putting butts in seats IMO.

Where was Warrior between Nov 1992 - April 1996? Never heard of him working in Japan/ECW/Mexico so anyone know, what he did during this period?
(Before anyone says, no he was not Renegade in WCW)

In his DVD, when they are talking about him being suspended for missing dates, there is a image of what looks to be a house show card that lists warrior as wwf champion facing Vader. Not sure the date on it but thinking late summer. Has made me think there was a warrior/Vader feud planned, and I have heard rumors before that Vince was thinking about a Warrior/HBK match for Summerslam 96. Maybe warrior was slated for one last run with the belt, especially if michaels wasnt drawing as well as hoped.

(Before anyone says, no he was not Renegade in WCW) he ran Warrior University during that time. Also, took various independent bookings, including NWC in Las Vegas in 1995 (you can find a promo on youtube, he is wearing sunglasses.)

The ratings and buyrates were in the gutter by the time 1996 rolled around. 1994-1997 was a pretty bad time for the WWF in regards to the money aspect of the business (1997 was a pretty good year storyline wise however.) They were trying basically anything to draw. If i recall they brought in Roddy Pipper for a bit, trying to harken back to the Golden Age.

Who cares, he did the best thing he ever could have at WM12, ruined Triple H's WM career before it even began.
I absolutely love that match, and I loved it back when it happened, before anyone even knew who hhh was.

I gotta think WCW and the early success of Nitro was a factor, too. Everyone said Nitro would fail spectacularly when it launched in competition with Raw, but even before Hall & Nash jumped to WCW, that simply wasn't the case. Nitro was holding its own, and it was no secret that Eric Bischoff had Ted Turner's bank account at his disposal if he wanted to try to up the ante.
With Vince's business not doing terribly well, and the real threat that a competitor with money might sign a big name like the Warrior, Vince probably thought it best to bring Warrior back before WCW could grab him, even if it meant running those god-awful Warrior University ads during his TV shows.

I find it funny how HHH lost to him in a few seconds, getting up from the Pedigree as if nothing happened. Of all the two people for that type of match to happen.
Yea, business was a bit slower than, Ultimate Warrior still generated huge interest. This is also before the internet became prevalent so there was still this mystique factor associated with a Superstar like him showing up and taking over again.

As a 9/10 year old mark, his return seemed awesome but it felt so weird. It was like, "why is he not beating Goldust for the IC title or trying to have a match with HBK for the WWF title?". I just didn't get it. Then he was gone.

That might be the central factor in the resigning. WCW kept rolling out the star power so it stands to reason that Vince was grasping at anything he could to compete.

Well the warrior run was certainly historic but for the wrong reasons. He came back at a time when no selling moves an jumping up and down like he had sat on a firework just wasn't cutting in wrestling anymore. Truth is he sucked in his matches, and was a brief nostalgic run that fizzled out. However as said, he was a big star once over and wcw would pull anything to win the ratings so vinnie mac obviously didnt want another blow to his company perhaps
