Hey guys!
Just wondering what the exact "contract status" of Terry Funk was in 1997. I know he appeared at the 1997 Royal Rumble and did a few segments on Shotgun Saturday Night leading up to the event. He then "retired" over the summer and came back in 1998 as Chainsaw Charlie.
Was there more to his WWF run in 1997 or just the Royal Rumble? I didn't catch a lot of Shotgun Saturday Night back then so I'm not sure how long he was around.

I remember him being at WM 14 teaming with Cactus Jack and them becoming tag champs.
I don't really know the circumstances but perhapes Paul E. let Vince borrow one of his talents seeing as Vince helped ECW out in '97 leading up to the Barely Legal PPV.

I don't really know the circumstances but perhapes Paul E. let Vince borrow one of his talents seeing as Vince helped ECW out in '97 leading up to the Barely Legal PPV. I think that's basically the deal. ECW began working with the WWF beginning in 1996 and really ramped it up in early 1997 with the ECW episode of Raw, the RVD storyline, etc. Terry Funk was a major part of ECW at this time and really the only guy on their regular roster that the WWF could bring in and assume most fans would be familiar with him. Not to mention the Rumble is traditional place for legends to make a cameo, so if Funk was available he was probably a no-brainer. My guess is he didn't have a WWF "contract" per se, in 1997, and was simply brought in a few times for specific shots due to the ECW relationship. Later on, toward the Chainsaw Charlie experiment, he may have been under something semi-exclusive. |

i also read part of the problem was his on-air cursing at a time when the WWF was making the baby-steps toward the beginning of the Attitude Era,but wasn't there yet....
calling Vince a "Yankee sonuvabitch" and a "No good bastard" on the air didn't help....

True. What made me think of this was on the "Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin" DVD there is a Shotgun Saturday Night extra segment between Terry Funk & Stone Cold the night before Royal Rumble 1997 that was actually pretty entertaining. Like I said, I never caught much of Shotgun Saturday Night back in the day so I was wondering if he had any more appearances or if he was done after the Rumble...
