Speaking of Edge, I really thought the main event for SummerSlam (Being that it was in Toronto) was going to be Edge vs. Chris Benoit for the World Title.
I remember on Raw, they had that miscue which lead to Benoit and Edge losing the tag titles to La Resistance, I really figured they were gonna go in that direction with Benoit vs. Edge in Toronto.
I still say Benoit should have held the title right on to Survivor Series, losing it back to Triple H, had a rematch with Triple H at the Rumble inside a steel cage and lost, only to have Orton win the Rumble and go on to face Triple H at Mania that year.
It seems (and this is just my theory) that they moved Orton to the World Title at SummerSlam just so he could be the new youngest World Champion, thus getting rid of Brock Lesnar being the youngest one before, since he left the company so abruptly after WM 20.

HHH rushed the Orton feud.he wanted the title off Benoit and in an Evolution feud as soon as possible.unfortunately nobody bought Orton as a face because he was still totally unlikable.then ol Champ In Law DESTROYED him.
now Batistas turn?that was done excellently and the payoff was great.
I do agree that part of the thinking here was to erase Lesnar.

Trying to erase Lesnar from the history books was probably apart of giving Orton the title so fast, but back in 2004, he was easily the most over heel in the company. While fans were simply tired of seeing Hunter in the main event, Orton was getting legit heat as a guy who everybody hated. He was this cocky jerk who everybody hated but always seemed to win. After coming off great feuds w/ Foley and Edge, the next logical step was pushing Orton to the main event.
While I felt that Benoit should have won and held onto the title longer, Orton winning wasn't bad either. What killed Orton was Hunter turning him face. He had no face qualities what so ever. The WWE expected fans to cheer him because Evolution kicked him out. He was basically a loser. Following jobbing to Trips 3 weeks after getting the title, he went on a 5 month jobbing spree, loosing to every Evolution member and basically having his whole push squashed. After winning the title, Orton should have remianed heel since he was over as a heel and never had any face qualities.
As for how I would have booked it, I would have had Benoit retain the title in a close match. Orton would have remained heel, but over the next few months he would have slowly turned face, and eventually fought Hunter and win the title at WM21. It would have been similar to Batista's slow face turn, but Batista's main event push came so quick that it was unexpected. Orton was getting a huge push before winning the title. Batista went from jobbing to Maven in November to main eventing WM21 4 months later. Batista's push was great, but I think they should have given him more of a mid-card push before getting to the main event. Orton should have been the one to get the title shot at WM had he been pushed right.

This is a VERY touchy subject for me because what he did in the end completely erased everything he ever did in wrestling. However, some of the things I'll remember of him in wrestling are:
Breaking Sabu's neck. My god, that was brutal to watch. Making Triple H tap out and winning the World title at WrestleMania XX Winning the 2004 Royal Rumble Getting tapped out by Cena. That STILL bugs me because it's a joke Cena could make ANYONE tap out, let alone Benoit. Come on... His matches with Kurt Angle were awesome.
One thing I would love to have seen is him having a match with CM Punk. Man, that would've been great.

I remember watching that match w/ Cena and thinking "WTF!?" It took 30 minutes for one of the greatest submission experts of all time, Kurt Angle, to make Benoit tap out in their match at the Royal Rumble 2003, yet Cena was able to make Benoit tap in a crappy 6 minute match. That totally killed any main event momentum Benoit had left for me and disrespected him big time to me. Had Cena just pinned him in 6 minutes, fine, but to make the guy tap out in 6 minutes was a joke considering the WWE pushed him for years as a guy who wouldn't give up and could take an insane amount of pain.
