just something i was thinking about...it was 1989,and Randy Savage had just lost the WWF Championship to Hulk Hogan at WM V....but in the midst of embarking on a summer long "revenge" program with Hogan ( which would brin Zeus and Brutus Beefcake into the mix as well) ,they decided to have Savage briefly detour into a couple matches with Jim Duggan and have Savage beat him and take his crown, thereby becoming "King" of the WWF...
my question is,was this really needed? would Savage have been better off just being himself, and let the Crown fall to someone else who needed the exposure/push? or was it a good thing for Savage, and did it help him?

I never did like it when Savage became the "Macho King". Didn't need it in my opinion. Trying to think who I would have had beat Duggan. "Model King" Rick Martel ? "The Worlds Strongest King" Dino Bravo ? Honky Tonk King ? If Hercules would've been heel at the time King Hercules might not have been too bad.

Coming off a title loss at Wrestlemania, they probably wanted to do something with Savage to keep him credible and important in the eyes of fans. Not that he needed it as he was one of the premier players during that time.
The same can be said for Bret Hart winning the first King of the Ring in 1993. Did he need it? Not really, he was already plenty over and looked at as a main event talent.
Consolation prizes when Hogan steals your belt at Wrestlemania.

Consolation prizes when Hogan steals your belt at Wrestlemania. except Hogan didnt steal Savages belt at WM5.it was the logical conclusion and any other outcome would have been utter crap-then or now.the people HATED Savage for what he done-plus they had strong overtones of him being a woman beater(which of course he was) Hogan going over at 5,was one of THE best WM moments-hands down-not at all like the Hart situation. it was probably one of Savages famous sulky tantrums that led to him being the King Of The Ring. also it was after the Hogan feud.the finish to the Hogan/Savage feud was at Summerslam 89.Duggan was still King at SS89.
