I honestly wouldnt change the Rumble or Austins path to victory at all.part of Vinces problem today is that he has forgotten a how to build a story and has shortened his RTWM too much.
having a build from NWO to WM isnt enough IMO and it continues to be a problem.I also wouldnt change the manner in which Austin lost the belt.IYH:Breakdown was excellent and Austin fighting the odds against Kane & Taker to be royally screwed should NEVER be changed.
I wouldnt have brought Bret back until after WM14 where he and his straight laced hart Foundation start to feud with the new DX Army leading to bret becoming the corperate champ at Survivors 98 and a resumption of the feud between he and Austin.
but that would be at the expense of the Rock.if Bret stayed someone wouldnt have advanced as much......but I definately wouldnt have done it at the expense of Austin.he saved Vinces ass alongside the Mr McMahon character(something else that may have been affected)
its hard to say isnt it?great thread though man.+1

Had Bret been around after Survivor Series 1997 he would have most likely have held the title until WM14 and then have dropped it to Austin. Everything from 1997 had been set up for it. After losing to Bret at WM13, he began feuding w/ the Hart foundation all year long. After going through Pillman and Bulldog, Austin was ending his feud w/ Owen around the time the screw job had happened. Austin would have still won the rumble and then have gone on to finally defeat Bret for the title at WM.
As for Bret after that, its hard to say. W/ Bret still the champ at the Royal Rumble, Shawn would have never hurt his back, so maybe the big match between the Hart Fountdation and DX would have finally been built up. Perhaps Bret vs Shawn at SummerSlam, and then a big match between the Hart Foundation and DX to end the fud at Survivor Series 1998. That way Austin still gets his big run w/ the title, Kane still gets his title win at KOTR, and Rocky could still win his first world title at Survivor Series.

I could have seen him in Michaels shoes at Mania maybe dropping the title.

There is no way Bret vs. Austin would have happened at WM 14. They clearly had it set to have HBK vs. Austin at WM that year. HBK was made into the number one heel with the company, due to Bret getting 'screwed' out of the Title. If Bret did stay around, I couldn't even imagine who he would work with. I mean, look at Owen, he kind of fell into a weird place when they couldn't find anyone for him to feud with, unless it was DX.

I mean, look at Owen, he kind of fell into a weird place when they couldn't find anyone for him to feud with, unless it was DX. Shawn was thrown into the #1 heel role because Bret was gone. The Hart Foundation was getting legit heat while DX was seen as a tweener group. Austin had been feuding w/ the Hart Foundation all year, having gone through Owen, Bulldog, and Pillman. The next logical step was for him to have avenged his loss and defeat Bret for the title at WM14. The WWF had been building up for their huge rematch all year w/ Austin going after the Hart Foundation. Bret was the #1 heel all year, and HBK didn't take that spot until Bret was gone. With Owen, he was in an akward spot because of the screwjob. He didn't have Bret or anybody to back him up backstage anymore, and with HBK and Hunter helping w/ the booking, Owen was jobbed out to Hunter for weeks, even though he was suppose to be the guy to have gotten revenge for the screwjob.

I really don't think that about Bret and WM 14 against Austin. If you watch Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows, there is this scene with him and Patterson in the ring and Bret goes "is Shawn going heel??" and Pat goes "I believe so" and Bret even says "so where do I go now, I go from being the number 1 babyface to the number 1 heel, and now Michaels is taking that spot"

I've often wondered this and I honestly don't know what they would've done.
I don't know what I would've done with him either.
I just wish he would've stayed. His wCw run was trash.

From what I've read, Bret's 98 was full until after Mania
-Bret was to win at SS -Bret would have fueded and faced Shamrock at IYH:DX -Bret was to win and face HBK at RR, where intially it was to be a Ladder match
Now, this is where I forget things, lol I think Bret was to lose there, and Austin/Michaels was to happen at WM14, with Austin winning. Thereby allowing Bret/Austin to fued after WM for the title.
Its weird, if Bret had stayed, just how much would have changed.

Bret Hart vs. Ken Shamrock in the main event for the WWE Title, which is called "D-Generation X"?? No way. No way could that happen. It had to be HBK in the main event spot there.
What I don't get, is Bret was supposedly under contract till after the DX ppv, why didn't they just have Bret drop the title to HBK there at a ppv based for Shawn??

I kid you not, maye it wasn't to headline, but the plan was to have Bret/Ken at the PPV. Maybe we would have gotten HBK/Taker or something to headline.

Actually on the new Bret vs. Shawn DVD, Hart states that he and Michaels were booked to face eachother at 'Mania 14.
I always thought that Austin challenging Hart for the title at WM 14 would've been awesome.

I would've just been happy to see the Hart Foundation stable continue.
I think that still had a LOT of gas left in the tank.

I believe that Bret's contract was up after the Survivor Series PPV, but due to his contract w/ the WWF, he couldn't show up on any competitions show for a month, but Bischoff still could have announced the signing of Hart right away on TV.
Bret, even though he wasn't under contract, told Vince he'd show up anytime during the next month to lose the title. He also claimed that he convinced Bischoff to hold off on announcing that he'd just signed Bret in order for him to lose the title. Vince didn't trust him, and the screwjob resulted.

the impact of Bret staying would have been massive.Mcmahon vs Austin wouldnt have happened......
The Mr McMahon character was VITAL to Vince turning things around.it fuelled the Austin mega rise.
