What is the appeal of....

To me, I go to see movies to be entertained. I dont go to see 2 and a half hours of talking. I want to be entertained. I do enjoy different genres of film, but dont limit myself to just one category. I enjoys movies such as Black Swan and Slumdogg MIllionaire, but have no interest in the Kings Speech because to me its just boring. I enjoy hollywood summer box office hits, but do agree that most are rushed and dont live up to their potential. But to me, old so called classics bore the hell out of me, and dont appeal to me. I would much rather crapthrough Spiderman than Citizen Kane, because I find Citizen Kane boring as hell. Just my opinion, someones movies taste shouldnt matter to others, because there will always be someone out that that hates a certain movie.

The king's speech is brilliant, everyone has their opinion but you can not deny that it is a masterpiece in terms of acting, the voice of a king, like any political figure, is your best weapon to communicate, persuade and lead his people. A king who stutters may seem like a weak leader, frail figure, Colin Firth did such an amazing job.

I don't think a fan of The Human Centipede should be able to question the tastes of other individuals.

I have to agree with OP in that a film which has the plotline of 'a king trying to get over his speech impedement' isn't particularly appealing. Heck, I still haven't seen it despite constantly hearing people sing its praise and film is probaby my biggest passion. Then again, it's largely a historical/biographical piece and I have never been much of a fan of either genre. But, a film can only get so far in it's technical successes. Even if you have great acting, substantial characters and some good directing - it won't necessarily be a good movie, not to mention an enjoyable one.

I enjoy Academy Award nominated films long before they ever become nominated. The fact that they do is merely a coincidence because I have no prior knowledge of them happening.

See there is this weird logic that everyone has different taste in movies, music, and art in general. Just because you don't find something entertaining, doesn't mean there aren't people out their that do. It just happens that a large amount of people out there were entertained by these movies that you've mentioned. After being here this long I still don't understand why people question each other's taste in things. To quote Swayze in the classic film Roadhouse, "Opinions vary......."

Some people appreciate more nutted-out storytelling. At the end of the day, different people like different things. No need to question it.

The Hurt Locker won Best Picture a few years back and that was a great action filled movie.

Anyone ragging on Kings Speech never saw it. How can you even have an opinion on a film you didn't see? Talk about ignorance. The film had it all, action, drama, suspense, comedy, there was something there for everyone. Maybe it was just too complex for you guys who try to argue that Transformers or whatever flavor of the month piece of garbage should be nominated for best picture.
