You might also look at the ultimate universe. I enjoyed that a lot up until Ultimatum. I don't think I read any after that.
:'(I didnt read much DC other then the Blackest Day arc.
I think Civil War is great just because you get the most bang for your buck so to speak.
The books not only had the Avengers at the center but every other hero and villain in it as well. Not only that the art was so amazing in the main books. for me it was the first time seeing anything from Steve McNiven.
The Civil War sets up the next four or five years of cross over books that effected every character.
From the Civil War we had the Initiative then WWH, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and finally Siege.
All these stories had to deal with the Marvel Universe as a whole rather then just certain parts. And we saw how the decisions made during each story would effect the next right away. It was like a complete series of interesting event take place with out the fear of waiting to see what would happen next. We all just kept reading, that's how entertaining it was.
Not to mention that all those crossovers effected other books as well, good and bad. Spider-man for example (bad), did a complete do over on his life. IronMan (good) had some of his best years of stories during that time too.
Cap was "killed" and Bucky came to take over, which i think was a pretty cool idea.
