I created this thread 9 years ago... & its still ticking over ššš Over 23 years of hurt, just can't be summed up in a 16+ page thread š Itās because the angle was so well done and they botched it at the finish line. And itās worse because the finish line was the easiest part of the angle to book! Sting beats Hoganā¦.the end. How did they manage to have that result but still butcher it!?

Has Sting ever discussed what happened that night? I canāt recall him ever giving his thoughts on the whole situation outside of admitting to his own drug issues at the time. Sting has always been one of the ultimate ācompany men,ā doing everything that was asked of him. He continued to work on and off with Hogan for another 15 years or so, so maybe he didnāt think it was a big deal or didnāt care. Would love to hear his side of the story though.

All Iāve ever heard/read was Sting basically saying he was supposed to win and that ādonāt work for me, brotherā Which Iām fairly certain thatās 90% or more of what happened. Iām not one to judge on how anyone looks TBF, but if I had the build and tan of Starrcade 97 then Iād be very happy with myself. So to hell with that Eric says. I have heard some rumor and innuendo that Sting was on some form of substance(s). Iāve watched that match at least 25 times and I just donāt see it. Was Sting perfect in all of his execution? No, but has he ever been? Plus itās is first match in front of fans in over a year. I give him a pass there I think Hogan and Bischoff put their spin on it that Sting might not have been in a clear state of mind, he looked āflabbyā and āwasnāt tanā - To me, thatās telling me it doesnāt work for you brother without telling me it doesnāt work for you brother. And Stingās too good of a guy to tell the dirt.

Sting had great matches with Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Vader, Ravishing Rick Rude and Great Muta.

Sting has recently written an article about his condition mentally & physically in 1998....because of this? Bischoff opens up about him for the 1st time ever on 83 weeks in the episode Sting 1998.
Highly highly recommended.

Been going through a WCW re-watch and find it ridiculous that Hogan took a clean loss to Giant on a Nitro in the buildup to Souled Out 1998, yet in the previous month refused to put Sting over clean in two different bouts. Perfectly sums up WCW at that time.

It is astonishing how great the build-up of Sting was in 1996/97, and the feud with Hogan was in 1997, but how terrible everything else was with the match and the aftermath. After Sting lost to Hogan at Starrcade, then they stripped him of the title, then he won the title back only to lose it to Savage a short while later, who lost the belt to Hogan the next night, they basically killed of Sting in 1998.

This still might be my top biggest gripe in wrestling history. It was completely fumbled.
Sting shouldāve won clean and kept the belt for months. Screwy finish and hot potatoing the title through 98 is so annoying.
WCWās downfall started at Starrcade 97 and Iāll die on that hill

I've been rewatching/watching this story arc on my weeks holidays over the past 6 months. Nitro and the ppvs. I started at fall brawl 97 I think š¤ and am up to the Nitro after Uncensored 98. I was more a Raw guy in my teens, so some stuff I'd seen. Ppvs I hadn't because the UK didn't get them.
It was so easy. But yeah Hogan is a piece of crap lol. He's booked as a face whilst being a heel! Can't lose clean ever. The whole thing was a mess from Starrcade onwards. And for all the crap WWE gets for short dq finishes on Raw, Nitro was just the same if not worse! And they did it on ppv as well!

Who knows how the War wouldāve panned out had they just put Sting over clean and run with the franchise.

And for all the crap WWE gets for short dq finishes on Raw, Nitro was just the same if not worse! And they did it on ppv as well! Yeah both Raw and Nitro had a ton of issues with DQ finishes. The difference is that the WWF more often than not used them to advance storylines and keep fans invested. WCW did them because of all the political crap going on and nobody wanting to job to anyone. And the biggest cardinal-sin is that WCW did this on PPV too. At some point fans will stop spending money to see crap finishes after weeks of this crap on weekly TV (which is eventually what happened). Starrcade 1997 was the biggest red flag for fans that something was seriously wrong behind the scenes in WCW, but they remained competitive with the WWF until around October of that year. The Halloween Havoc debacle of Hogan/Warrior and around a quarter of their paying fans not getting to see the main event seemed to be the tipping point. Most fans point to the finger poke of doom as the last straw, but Halloween Havoc 1998 seemed to be the real ālast strawā for a lot of fans.

I havenāt been shy in the past of being a Sid mark, and watching his 1999 run again has been a fun ride. Once he split from Macho and started his singles run the guy was an unsung hero that year for WCW.
Sting/Sid from Hog Wild 1999 has always been an underrated favorite of mine. Nothing flashy but cool to see two main eventers have a straight up fight and clean finish (a rarity for WCW). I find myself throwing this match on every so often.
Sid/Benoit from Fall Brawl 1999 is another underrated yet forgotten match from WCW. Despite all the WCW BS, there are some hidden gems throughout 1999 if you look hard enough.
