They did songs for movies with the specific intent of being able to play them on the radio? Or theme songs by MAJOR artists that had the legit chance of being one of the biggest songs of the year?...Soundgarden doing a song for Avengers and Pitbull doing a (IMO, godawful) song for MIIIB are the first songs in a few years I can recall this happening recently...
Growing up these were always some of my favorite songs, and they still are honestly. If you can think of any I missed, please share.

Taylor Swift had a couple songs for the Hunger Games soundtrack, that I would imagine were probably a big deal.
As for the ones you posted, Go Ninja is a great guilty pleasure song and Jordan Hill's "Remember Me This Way" is legit one of my fav songs. But you missed two big ones from that same time frame:

The most recent I can think of are 'The Wrestler' and that one song by Miranda Cosgrove for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.

This song was actually produced for one of the Addams Family movies, but due to Michael Jackson's legal troubles at the time, they didn't end up using it. Really wish they would have, as I much prefer it to either of the songs that wound up playing in the end credits of either movie.

But I gotta admit, I dig Hammer's song more...

The first 3 Spider-man movies each had a signature song.
Chad Kroeger and Josie Scott- Hero (Spider-man) Dashboard Confessional- Vindicated (Spider-man 2) Snow Patrol- Signal Fire (Spider-man 3)
I thought those 3 were pretty good songs, very indicative of the tone of each of the films.

I remembered this one last night and I remember it being HUGE when The Box was on TV. (I can't be the only one who remembers that station?)
I purposely left off any Disney songs that came to mind. They had so many great ones, I wanted to leave them for others to include.

Oddly no one has mentioned what i see as the two biggest examples.
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls Wild Wild West by will Smith
Both songs were actually more popular than the films they came from and really were the peak of the trend of making songs from soundtracks hits.
These days, most movies still get that big song to play when the credits start rolling, but radio often doesn't latch onto them for some reason. I think it's more to do with the way the music industry has changed over the last decade than anything though.
I did hear the new Soundgarden song on the radio the other day though, so that was pretty cool.

Whew. I feared that he'd covered Huey Lewis' song from Back to the Future.

I consider myself a big fan of the Keys so I'ma little embarrassed to say, I don't know if the song was made for the movie or not, but I can say with 100% certainty that the live version blows the studio version away.

Bruno Mars just did that song for Twilight. There was also a Death Cab for Cutie song from Twilight like a year or two ago that was pretty popular and played a great deal.
