I was just thinking, we all seem to hate lines like Best of 2010 and Best of 2011 Basics and Elites because except for the Best of 2011 Santino, all of those figures are straight up re-releases.
This creates clutter on the shelves because "Best of" sets usually come out at the same time or slightly after the original figure came out, and is sometimes still clogging shelves. Having identical figures on the shelves at the same time causes a severe log jam, and we have already talked to death about Mattel's distribution and stores being filled with shelfwarmers and not ordering more yadda yadda yadda.
So instead of having the "Best of" Series be straight up re-releases, would it be a better idea if Mattel changed the line to something like "top superstars of the year" and used it as an opportunity to at least showcase the characters as repaints in a different costume? They could probably still even use the same CHARACTERS, but at least have the attires be different.
For example, let's just for arguments sake say that Mattel has Basic 18 CM Punk slated to be in the Basic "Best of 2012" set. Instead of doing a straight up re-release when so many people will have already purchased that identical figure, why not put Punk in a different costume so at least it's not the SAME FIGURE?
I understand Mattel's perspective from a business standpoint and they have to get the top names extreme exposure....I'm just begging them to at least make it a repaint set instead of a straight up re-release set. Repaints in different costumes might give the product a better chance at selling and not sitting on shelves as long as the very frustrating "Best of" sets do.
Anybody agree or have any different ideas?

I'm fine with the Best of, and I'm fine with it being the same attire, because it gives me the opportunity to get nice figures that I regretfully passed on earlier that year.

I like it....It gives u another shot at getting a figure u missed. If i wanted to get Elite 1 Taker, Elite 2 Orton and HHH, Elite 3 Cena, Elite 4 Kane it would cost over $100. I got the best of 2010 versions for under $75.
The Elite 8 Sheamus was a great figure that alot of people missed out on. They re-released it in Best of 2011. How is that a bad idea?

Best of Series is great since it comes out around Christmas time for people to buy some figures they missed/passed on. 2011 wasn't a great set since Morrison was released and another Orton. Maybe this year they will include Rock, Punk, Sin Cara, etc.

I'd keep it. I'd stop putting Orton and Cena in it and save it for new guys and figures that don't get made that often

If it's not profitable for them, then yes, Mattel should discontinue the "Best of" line. If it is profitable for them, then they shouldn't.

I would rather they use the best of line to re-release short packed figures that some of us may have missed, not just ones that we passed on. Sure throw a Cena or Rey but let the majority of them be those.

I would rather the set be the actual best FIGURES....not who Mattel thinks are the best "superstars"

Agreed with you, Lorenzo. We STILL have Best of 2011 Orton and JoMo on the pegs at my Target (Mind you, I had only fished them out of the back about 2 months ago, but still!)

I would rather the set be the actual best FIGURES....not who Mattel thinks are the best "superstars" That's also another problem....who is determining what the "best is" and what information are they determining this by? Looking at Best of 2011 Elite.....none of those were the Best figures of the year. What was the sereis? Elite 11 John Cena Elite 9 Randy Orton Elite 11 Rey Mysterio Elite 10 John Morrison Elite 8 Sheamus I don't believe there was even a 6th figure. Now, the Sheamus was important because perhaps people missed him in Elite 8 and still needed him or the WWE title. But none of the other 4 were the best of ANYTHING in 2011. If they really wanted to put together a list of the BEST of 2011 it would have been: Elite 11 CM Punk Elite 9 Zack Ryder Elite 8 Sheamus Elite 9 Miz Elite 11 Wade Barrett Those, IN MY OPINION, were the 5 top Elites in 2011, based on the look of the figure, the attire, and the accessories. Instead, the "BEST OF" sets end up actually being the least popular figures from previous sets.

They absolutely should. They are almost always re-releases of figures which sold terribly in the first place. In essence, they re-release shelfwarmers. They never choose good figs either. There was no E6 Goldust in 2010, just Taker, Rey, Orton, Cena, Kane, etc. Its like walking into a time warp in the Twilight Zone. New figs! Oh wait, its Elite 12 Orton, Elite 13 Rey, Elite 14 Cena, Elite 14 Taker, and Elite 13 Sheamus again. They clogged pegs forever. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! The only exception was the Basic Santino, and that was a fluke. I still have BO2011 hanging around. Its a huge waste of shelf space.
