Anyone else heard that Gambit is getting a new ongoing series starting August 2012? I am super psyched for my favorite X-Men character to be getting his own series again. Hey....and no Bella Donna in issue 1...they promised. LOL!

First full solo book lasted two years, his second lasted one. I hope Marvel can figure this out and get 3 or 4 years out of it and not turn it into a year of Gambit solo, then add Wolverine for a year then add various X-Women to try and keep it going.

I just don't think Gambit is interesting or strong enough a character to carry an ongoing.

I just don't think Gambit is interesting or strong enough a character to carry an ongoing. I agree with that. I have never understood what people see in Gambit other than that he "looked cool." He has always kind of lacked substance, and been very wishy washy. A lot of that is bad writing, but that's all we have to go on. I'll pass unless I hear rave reviews, which I doubt.

The previous failure on the Gambit series always seems to stem from the lack of fleshing out his character and putting too much emphasis on the Thieves Guild and Gambit's pass. The writers are promising more stories about Gambit using his powers as a thief , his on again, off again relationship with Rogue, and his relationship with Mr. Sinister/Death. They said Gambit will be fleshed out more with his constant inner debate on doing the "right thing". I love Gambit, his power, his history, etc. I am hoping they stay away from Bella Donna and instead of jamming his life before the X_men down our throats....flesh his character out more in order to get non die hard fans interested in his past like they did with Wolverine.

His character is interesting on paper, but is it really worth a solo book? He was part of the roguish character boom that pushed characters like his pretty hard in the early to mid 90's. Expect some ret-cons and hallow character points to allow the creative team build a story.

And to be honest I am more interested in Rogue now then ever.

I could list 20, maybe 30 X-Characters, all just as unlikely to have a successful solo run as Gambit, that I'd like to see get a solo ongoing before Gambit.

I can name a lot, not 20 or 30, that I would rather see have a solo run outside of Wolverine. But Marvel wants to make money and Wolverine is the most popular X-Men character. Gambit is also highly popular and gets his own series. Surprised at the Gambit hate. Thought he was a WFigs darling.

Guess we will see depending on how the comic sells. I have been reading X-Men since the 80s....yet I am still a HUGE Gambit fan and have LOVED his stories in the X-Men comics, but only liked his own series, which at times got boring. But it was boring b/c what they were writing about the villians they put him against.

i'll check it out, i've always felt gambit is one of those characters that could still be taken and 'make something' of.

One day, a writer who is passionate about, and really gets Gambit, and is talented enough will come along, and likely give him either a spot in an on-going, or do a mini on him that will shine a light on the character that really puts him in a new perspective. From there, other writers will try and take the magic this writer gave the character, and try to emulate it, but fail miserably. See: Joss Whedon/Kitty Prdye.
Hopefully, for fans, James Asmus is that writer.

Issue 1 was good....Issue 2 was better. They have him pretty much separated from the XMen, which I think is good. The story is slow, but I think that has only helped flesh out this book. I love how they continue to make Gambit conflicted right/wrong and being able to justify bad behavior. What does everyone else think?

He's not a Horsemen anymore. Mr. Sinister seemed to have surpressed or destroyed Death. He is wearing black though.

If it doesn't star Josh Holloway as Gambit then it's going to suck.
