I found one of my old raw tapes from Nov. 2000 when Hunter was a tweener/face. He reunited with dx for one night to face the Radicalz. But the 'shocking' part was later that night, Hunter came out to supposedly help Austin fight off Angle but hit Austin with his sledgehammer. He then told Austin it was him all along. But watching back and looking at what was going on at that time, It seemed like Hunter was going to stay face, but since the Rikishi project didnt work out as planned, it looked like they put Hunter back into the heel role to help the storyline. I wasn't looking at the dirtsheets or anything back then, so my question is, was Triple H always suppose to be the accomplice or was there even suppose to be an accomplice? If anyone knows, it would be greatly appreciated

I think you were right. It wasn't originally planned to be Hunter, but after the fans didn't connect with the Rikishi, I believe they tried to reroute the ship with Hunter. Did it make much sense...? No, not really. But it lead to a great Triple H vs Austin feud.
Rikishi was a bad option to begin with. UGH!

I have always suspected this too.....Rikishi was such an odd choice and his motive was quite frankly crap wasnt it?
but at this time Vinnie was short on Bona fide heels.....and I find it hard to believe he was gonna turn HHH face??
I mean Angle was getting their in his champ role but after that?he had nobody else who would make sense

Accidents happen. Like Billy Gunn's entire career after he became injured in 2000. He was clearly being groomed for that role and a huge push, but he got injured. Just watch Survivor Series 1999 back. All of DX are there checking on Austin, apart from Billy Gunn. He had to off been him. I'm 100% sure that was the original plan anyways.
Rikishi was the one who was really hurt here. He was given a raw deal, being told he'd be against some of the greatest guys -Triple H, Kurt Angle, Austin, Rock, Taker-But instead almost ruined his character and he faded away into a tag team feud against Taker and Kane.

Gunn......yeah maybe.why sacrifice him to the Rock though if this was the plan?Vince was trying hard with him in 99 thats for sure.

I believe the plan was always to be HHH and Billy Gunn. HHH was the world champ at the time and basically made it his mission to put Austin out of commision. Him and Gunn were also back together as DX, so the whole thing made sense.
What I think messed the thing up was Gunn getting hurt and HHH eventually feuding w/ Angle during the summer and fall of 2000, which turned him face for a bit because the fans cheered HHH over guys like Angle and Benoit.
Rikishi made no sense what so ever, and even on screen Foley brought up that Rikishi wasn't even apart of the company when Austin was ran over. The sad thing is that ended up killing his career, as he was over big as a face but not at all as a heel.

I always assumed Billy Gunn too.
He was involved though. I remember him being part of Austin's investigation.

From my memory and understanding, the original culprit was to be Billy Gunn. However, Gunn just wasn't getting over with the fans as WWE wanted him to be. Thus Rikishi was kind of a throw in for the role. However, a lot of people just didn't buy Rikishi's heel turn/role. Thus HHH filled in for the final role.

Unfortinately turning Rikishi heel was the worst thing that could have happened to him, he was so over as a face with Too Cool.
Billy Gunn/Austin fued at that time would have been awesome, and just what Gunn needed to get himself the world title.

Didn't they try to say Rikishi was hanging out with Too Cool too during that time when he 'hit Austin' with the car?? I remember something about Too Cool and Rikishi being said, which made no sense to me cause they weren't together then. Too Cool were heels and weren't even paired up with Big Kish yet.

Immediately thought of this before I saw your post. Too Cool said that in an interview in WWF Magazine, and I said the same thing.
