I looked on Amazon. Each of the LOTR books are 450+ pages and two of them are over the 500 page mark. The Hobbit is ~330 pages. No idea how you stretch a 300 page book into six nine hours of cinema. You know what he's like.

Plus the extra 30-40 minutes worth of DVD extended scenes per film!

Totally unneeded. Don't get me wrong. I'm excited for The Hobbit, but it's not a long enough book to warrant three movies. This is called Milking the cow. Just about to say that. The Hobbit is under 400 pages while the combined count for the LotR's trilogy is around a thousand or so. Honestly I don't see how they can stretch it to a trilogy. Part of it involves showing all the stuff that happens to Gandalf when he disappears, which wasn't in the original story, but was all explained by Tolkein in the appendices placed at the end of RotK. I'm guessing he has already filmed enough to be 3 movies, because I don't see them getting everyone to come back to New Zealand. Of course I could be wrong. My only problem with this approach is it's going to make me watch the Hobbit far less often. I love the story, but sitting through 6-9 hours just for the one story, especially with parts I didn't grow up with, will be hard. What I'd love to see is some sort of "Original story" version that only shows what comes from the original book (which was all Bilbo's perspective). In these days of director's cuts and extended editions it would be nice to see a stripped down approach. Otherwise, I'll have to mostly stick to the 1978 animated film for home viewing.

As everyone said, The Hobbit is way shorter than LOTR, but I believe they are filling in blanks, such as following Gandalf when he leaves to fight Sauron with Saruman.
