Nice article. I don't think Jones is a coward... (he was quite happy to face Sonnen at 152) - I just think he had some really bad/strange advice from Greg Jackson about such a late opponent change. And I don't know whether he/they knew all the facts about the card being cancelled if he didn't take the fight either. At the end of the day, as selfish as it was, he was just looking out for number one... and he's not a fight promoter - Dana White and the UFC promoters/match-makers also have to be held accountable for having to ditch the whole thing. Whatever though, this whole mess has done Jones no favors at all - with the fans, fellow fighters, and the UFC brass. I like what James H said on the other thread about the double turn... Jones is going to be such a heel now - and Sonnen's popularity should go through the roof.

"coward"? Maybe not, but I just don't ing understand why he just didn't take the fight. You're one of the top P4P fighters in the world, you're the LHW Kingpin, and you bring in PPV buys. The whole event was centered around the main event. Jones was ALREADY in shape, ALREADY had about a 12 week training camp, yet fighting an out-of-shape 185lb fighter would be the worst decision of his career? Come on, man. I know everyone wants to shift blame on Jackson, but Jones is his own man and should have THOUGHT about how much was riding on this and just taken the fight.

I was wondering if Jones did agree to face Sonnen on 8 days notice was there a straight rematch clause in the proposed contract if Jones lost as that would have been favourable to him but if not then I see why Jones wasn't keen. Something's not right though as he did a (Buffer) 180 and suddenly agreed to Machida when he said it wouldn't make him any money. He's a hypocrite at the least lol

I don't see why he wouldn't have gotten an immediate rematch IF he lost.

I don't know why he didn't take the fight, but I think what was in the back of Greg Jackson's mind was. If Jon somehow got caught, couldn't defend the take down or lost in whatever manner, how awful does that make his camp and fighter look?

I feel comfortable saying that Jones taking the fight and losing could have made him worth more money for a rematch. Additionally, he would have more fans in defeat than he does right now as the current champion who appears to be ducking opponents. There is one thing you don't do in MMA, and that's appear like you are hiding, from anything, or anyone. He let down the fans, his peers, and specifically the UFC. Coward, chump, pick whatever word you want, but he wasn't a warrior, which is what we should have been calling him had he handled the whole thing correctly imo.

He is the Champion and should have stepped up to fight Chael, he had a chance to save the ppv and the entire night, and he chose not to. He was even slated to make Nike's debut in mma. Between Jones not taking fights and Silva only fighting twice maybe 3 times a year, The ufc is in need of fighting Champions

OK....First if the Giants were in the Superbowl and eight days before the game they NFL came to you and said, "hey your not playing against team x, its now team z" and the Giants said," wait we have been training specifically for team x were going to wait" you would be calling them punks !!!! Any other sport(minus boxing) they cant switch your opponent last second. But when done in a sport dealing with hand-to-hand combat its OK. For those who don't practice or understand the art of fighting(it is a art) its not like a backyard brawl, you train for specific things that are specific to that opponent. Maybe fighter x leads with a left and drops his right when doing so. you train to look for that. but you suddenly get fighter z who doesn't do that, it throws off your fight plan. These aren't dogs you throw in a ring and say fight. Sonnen didn't deserve to fight him, he just lost, but because he has a big mouth (racist) and is good for a sound bite suddenly he deserves another title match WTF !!!!! You only have two real reasons to want to see this...one you want Sonnen to get knocked the hell out or your praying hes the great white hope ! Sonnen had EVERYTHING to gain and nothing to lose. Belfort showed what could happen if your in the right place at the right time. Why Jones and Silva should keep fighting people that aren't in the league is crazy. Maybe everyone else needs to step there game up. Right now they are the most dominate, that doesn't mean they should go out and fight every two weeks just to prove it. Eventually they both will lose, everyone does at some point. But at least have them lose in a scheduled well prepared fight with some honor.
