First of all, I am a huge Punk fan. I've been watching him since about 2004, and was thrilled when he debuted on ECW in 2006. I've enjoyed everything he's done in his WWE run and I still am enjoying what he does currently. However, I just can't agree with his claims to being the best in the world. Especially Monday when he called himself the best wrestler, talker, and technician.
His matches, while entertaining, are pretty much all the same. I know this is the case for most wrestlers. During all of Punk's face run, his matches all followed the same formula as a John Cena match. Take a beating, make a few false comeback spots, and then eventually hit the same exact comeback spot each match(Clothesline, clothesline, duck opponents line into swinging neck breaker, get them in the corner to hit the high knee/bulldog combo, springboard lariat followed by the GTS. Oh and let's not forget the elbow drop which usually looks like crap.
As far as being the best talker goes, I do like what he says in the since that he doesn't resort to cheesy one liners and he speaks intelligently. But I don't really care for his same speal each and every week of him just bitching about how he is the best. Best technician? Hell no, not even close. Punk is not much a technician at all.
All I'm saying is Punk is good, but he truely is not the best in the world and anyone who thinks he is, is blindly just following him like a sheep. That is all.

I understand people are fans of him, but my god, he isn't the best. He will never compare to wrestlers like Michaels, Hart, Taker, Rock and Austin. Punk in my mind is generic.. He surly has an interesting look and gimmic... whoa, it's not a gimmic?

Eh, it took long enough for people to turn on him.

Im not turning on him. I'm still a huge fan and not saying that he sucks. All I'm saying is, he's far from being the best in the world.

well, okay, then who in your opinion IS?
in my opinion punk is without question the top talent in wwe. formulas in matches have always existed, it's how prevalent or played out they are. yea, okay, you've examined punk's matches enough to determine certain spots and finishes regularly used, but it's still no where near the same as the literally 100s of matches of cena's that have played out overall in the same manner.
no one can out talk him, he cuts by far the best promo in the wwe, no one is close. he is the roddy piper of our times on the mic.
i mean, his in ring ability? i might even call orton more skilled overall, but the whole package? punk by leaps and bounds.
and the only one CLOSE to him is austin aries and bobby roode, and they're not coming around any time soon.
i can watch raw all night and it be the same silly characters that don't really have any true priorities or character dynamic and just 'flow' through storylines and be bored all night with the 'same old same old', but as SOON as punk appears, it's game time.
just the way that even they dealt with that tag match on raw, how heyman comes out and they start agreeing to head to the back together....great writing, great moment, NEW MOMENT. that's what punk provides.

1:29 - 1:50 sums up my thoughts on Punk. He's a great talent, but he's not as good as he is in his own mind.

I'm sure he knows he isn't the best. It's just a gimmick.

As far as who I think the best in the world is - Kurt Angle. He may have made a joke of himself outside of the ring as a person, but when it comes to professional wrestling, he still can put on a better match and a cut more intense promo than pretty much anyone. When I see Kurt Angle, I think legitmacy. Punk is one of the best talents in WWE for sure, but I don't think he's leaps and bounds above any of the other top tier talents. As far as being the best talker, I completelty disagree. All Punk does is bitch in most of his promos and trash someone for there personal intergrity. He tries hard to push the envelope and be shoot which honestly, anyone can do(see Cena's promo from Monday). I think Triple H is just a good of talker if not better than CM Punk but Im sure many will disagree because many hate Triple H. Another thing that has always bothered me about Punk is his lack of physique. I don't think he needs to be roided freak but he definitely should have some muscle definition. He looks like an average guy that anyone could take in a fight.

All around, I think it's a toss up between Daniel Bryan and CM Punk.
...and CM Punk is the WWE Champion so I think he wins.

It is his gimmick. A catch phrease. Hart wasn't the best there is, was, or ever will be. The Rock isn't "The Great One." At some point, every major heel has called themselves the greatest of all time. It happens. It gets great heel heat. Mark Henry isn't the World's Strongest Man either.
It's not like Lebron James in a post game interview saying, I am the greatest of all-time, better than Jordan, Wilt, Kobe, and anyone else.

When I see Kurt Angle, I think legitmacy. kurt angle? really? at one time it would've been hard to argue that, but the man simply has lost a lot of his relevance and overall ability to sell a match. his matches still obviously speak for themselves, but i would by no means call his promos anything powerful or overtly relevant to wrestling outside of the feuds he's in. he's not doing anything special, really. i mean, blame that on tna's writing i guess, they've effectively downsized angle's meaning to the wrestling business with garbage angles. i would not put hhh even near punk. hhh is all declarative statements, punk is literally point after point. from before wwe to now, punk has cut the BEST promos bar none. sure, cena had one promo monday where they wrote it that he got the best of punk, but you really think it carried the weight that punk has with the mic? the way he single handedly stole the show last summer with a microphone and speech, that was relevant to the wrestling world at large? seriously, not even an argument here. if someone isn't willing to give credit where credit is due, that's too bad i guess - but there is NO ONE in wwe that can cut a promo like punk. it's all generic redoes of one's we've heard from like the last billion years. we'll have to agree to disagree there, i think he's fine and if anything has a unique look/style because he didn't just become another weight pusher.

At this moment in time I would say Punk is the best. And, last time I checked I didn't see any wool on me...

He's the best in the WWE currently, and has been for a couple of years now. He's not even my 'favourite' or anything, but as an all rounder, there are few who are in the same league as him. Honestly, look at the roster now. It's not bad by any stretch, but who deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as him? IMO; Christian, Mysterio, Taker, HHH, Kane and Cena. Well, the first five have been with the WWE significantly longer, not to mention two of whom are one off appearance guys. Then we have John Cena, who whilst being a fantastic promo guy IMO, has a much lower ratio of good matches compared to Punk. Punk will go down as one of wrestling's greats, no doubt about it. As for the OP, factoring in experience, he has an easy case for being the best wrestler currently.

I kind of agree. Funny, you make this post in 2012 and get the 'Shut up', eye-rolling', laughed off type responses. Had you made this post, what, 3 and a half, maybe 4 years back, most people would not only have been agreeing with ya, but also blabbering on about how he is boring and overrated (I remember that well).
He's great, but I think he really does think he's the best thing going and isn't gonna be happy unless WWE treat him as such. Plus, as we've seen before, you aren't allowed to be underwhelmed by anything CM Punk does, you aren't allowed to criticise him in the slightest, or you get mocked on here.
He's gotta be like in my top 5 favorites, and I've been a pretty big fan of his ever since his debut in WWE... but I have to agree with most of what you said.
Frankly Daniel Bryan is a better wrestler, and I find quite a few guys to be more entertaining in the ring: Kidd, Christian, Ziggler etc etc.
Damn right about the promos too. Great talker, but he does pretty much rely on the same old 'Best in the World blah blah respect blah blah I'm the best' stuff these days.

I Frankly Daniel Bryan is a better wrestler I wouldn't even stop there. He's the all round better total package than Punk. He managed to get more over than Punk did in a quarter of the time.
