Does it kind of suck that Jon Jones is defending his light heavyweight championship against Vitor Belfort of all people in the main event of UFC 152 on Sat., Sept. 22, 2012, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada? Yeah, it kind of does.
But it's not all bad.
Dan Henderson's injury -- and his refusal to open up about it until it was too late -- helped send us there, as did Lyoto Machida turning down a short notice bout against "Bones." The natural thing to do, then, is pair those two up for a fight when they return, right?
Right.
That's the plan as it stands right now, according to UFC President Dana White. MMA Fighting has a quote from the bossman on the plan:
"[Machida] should have taken the fight. We've seen it, history always repeats itself. Look how long it took Rashad (Evans) to fight for the title again. So you wanted to fight Jon Jones, you climbed up to the title fight and you don't take it. Now you're fighting (expletive) Dan Henderson. Now you might not even get to the (expletive) title again. You lose to Dan Henderson you're not anywhere near Jon Jones. You jump on opportunities when they're available. You get a shot at the title, the biggest money fight you can be in, the highest profile fight you can be in. And if you win that (expletive) fight, the whole world changes overnight."
Obviously, he's still upset at the way things have played out over the past few weeks and really, who can blame him? Bad crap happens every day he wakes up but this one month stretch has been ridiculous.
To recap: Henderson injured his knee and waited too long to pull out of the fight, forcing the UFC to find a short notice replacement with just eight days to prepare for the fight. Chael Sonnen was the only taker and Jones refused that fight so UFC 151 was cancelled.
White, thinking Machida would accept a fight against Jones at UFC 152 went ahead and announced that bout when making the announcement of UFC 151's cancellation. But "The Dragon" turned that down, as did a few others.
Finally, we've settled on Jones vs. Belfort and Henderson vs. Machida, the latter of which will take place on an upcoming fight card to be named.
Sound good?

Well he is right about Machida possibly blowing his chance.

BS fight is BS. While its an awesome fight, Hendo should not have to fight to be number one contender again. He hurt his knee and tried to fight through and tough it out in order to fight. Aldo just did the same thing, now we're getting ing Bonnar Vs Silva in an even bigger bullcrap fight. But according to Dana White that's okay. The politics in MMA is a joke. And why is MAchida being punished for Dana White jumping the gun? Dana took the word of the manager , not the fighter. That is his screw up and now he wants to punish anyone he can to mask his inadaquieces.

Personally, I don't think Machida desrved a title shot in the first place after beating Bader, so having him fight again is good. Henderson just has bad timing. Jones COULD in theory get hurt against Belfort or lose and not be ready for 6 months. Hendo would most likely want to fight again anyway to not extend his already long layoff. He's been out almost a year, remember. He's not getting younger. So the fight makes sense.
That being said, I hope Hendo knocks Machida's head off.

ughhh...good fight but honestly if Hendo loses whats the chance of him EVER getting a title shot again at his age...?
kinda sucks...he is the StrikeForce LHW Champ, TKO'D arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time...and he won the fight of the year with Shogun...
like I said, good fight...but crapty timing...I hope Hendo wins.

Henderson blew his right to the title shot the way he handled himself, very unprofessional to no notify the company until 8 days later.

What I would do: 1st: Make Hendo vs Jones Happen, It was the original fight, and I feel like were still owed to see it. And even Jones wants it, which leaves me to believe it would happen. 2nd: Vitor Belfort vs Lyoto Machida: How fantastic would this matchup be? I know alot of people were going back and forth on whose hands were quicker between the 2. Two powerful South paws who gave Bones the toughest fights of his career. 3rd: Have the Shogun/Gustafsson winner take on the Sonnen/Forrest rematch winner (Assuming it still happens)
4th: Rashad vs Hamill: I think due to timing this fight would make plenty of sense, and not to mention they are 2 huge names of the LHW division.
5th: Have the Texiera/Maldonado take on the Davis/Prado winner (assuming they winners come out healthy)
6th: Have a Bader vs Little Nog rematch. The 1st one was controversial by many, and Id be excited to see how the the outcome would be.

The 1st one was controversial by many, and Id be excited to see how the the outcome would be. God damn that must have taken you some time. But it works. Dana should hire you. I disagree. Some of the fights are cool, some aren't. Others make no sense. Vitor will likely go back to middleweight where he belongs. Belfort vs. Machida makes no sense at all. Machida is a top five LHW, whereas Belfort is in a similar position, it's a weight class lower. He shouldn't be fighting Machida. He shouldn't have fought Jones. Did he almost win? Sure, and more power to him. He's an animal. The fact is that he took the fight to be a company man. He was never asking for Jon Jones or his Title. If Vitor wanted to fight at 205, he would. And he'd fair well. He's made the decision to fight at 185, and we should let him. Totally agree on Henderson vs. Jones. That should be up next. Evans vs. Hamill? No. Matt just came out of retirement and beat a guy making his debut. Rashad is arguably in the top 3 right now, easily top 5. This fight makes no sense what-so-ever. Shogun/Gus are cool, as is Griffin/Sonnen. The problem I have is with all of these other fights. Nog/Bader II, you've got the winner of one fight facing the winner of another. At the end of all of this you've got all of these contenders... Who will have to sit and wait for other contenders, who will have to sit and wait for the Champion to be fight-ready when inevitably it's their turn. I love playing match-maker, too. And I often create messes myself. But Joe Silva's job isn't easy. We're not even factoring in injuries or fighters rejecting offers. It's a a tough world.
