Post by Controversial Maverick PUNK on Oct 4, 2012 0:47:04 GMT -5
With John Cena and Randy Orton being gone from last weekend’s WWE live events, CM Punk’s importance to the company was a hot topic backstage. The feeling right now is that only two guys really draw big for the company – John Cena and CM Punk.
There’s also a feeling that they need to get Punk to where he doesn’t end up beat up and worn out like Cena and so many other top talents are. People this weekend were saying that Punk was looking sick or worn down.
Punk is being compared to Bret Hart’s early days with WWE in the sense that he’s the company workhorse but doesn’t get the nod of approval that a John Cena or Hulk Hogan would get.

Punk has said himself on multiple occasions that he doesn't have as much left in him as people think he does.
But I also think that he's a loyal guy with an appreciation for his current role. I can't imagine he'd simply leave WWE high and dry at this point in his career, he'll stick around to fill the role he needs to fill until there's someone there to replace him.
It's amazing how incredibly valuable he has become to the company.

Hell, I'd could see him taking a break after Mania next year.

Did they, or anyone, think keeping the WWE Title on him for an entire calendar year wasn't going to take a toll on him? Punk's the guy, so I'm just enjoying the ride for as long as it can or will last.

i still dont understand this company's mentality of "Cena > everyone else forever and always" they could have really cashed in with Punk as the #1 face....he had the fans in the palm of his hand, the adult guys who like him from the indies, the adult males who like him because he's not Cena, the kids who think he has cool tattoos, the girls who think he's cute....etc.
he was getting the loudest positive reactions of anyone on the roster, and yet they just couldn't base a PPV around him because they thought it wouldn't sell?? ridiculous.

I tend to agree. I don't think that Cena needed to necessarily be "edged out" in order to do it, either. Hell, put one of them on Smackdown. It's not like the brand split matters anyway, they both could have been working Raw. As much as I like Sheamus, it's pretty clear that he's in a totally different league below both Cena and Punk. I will say this. I went to two WWE house shows this year in Maine. WWE has been coming up here a lot lately because the shows are selling incredibly well - as well as they did at the peak of the Attitude Era. We had two sell outs this year. CM Punk went on after Cena at both of those shows. Cena was on the undercard. They made the mistake of putting Sheamus/Kane on after Punk at the second show, and a lot of people left. Maine has ALWAYS been, for lack of a better term, a traditional crowd. They gobble up what WWE feeds them, and move on. At both shows, Punk's reaction doubled that of Cena's. Punk's merchandise sold out before intermission. The kids I'd grown accustomed to seeing decked in Cena shirts and sweatbands were wearing CM Punk shirts and those cheap, imitation X'ed up wrist tape. The shift was dramatically clear.

CM Punk can only do so much. But it's WWE's fault that the put so much weight on two maybe three guys shoulders. They have a fully capable roster of guys dieing to get there chance. Yet the resort to saving PPV Main Event spots for Cena even when he is injured. They constantly put all their eggs in one basket.
So even though Ryback may not be ideal, least it's someone new to help carry the load. But anytime someone seems to be on the right track WWE pulls them back. So who knows where he'll be in a few weeks?
If nothing else this will help them realize just how good Punk really is.

I don't know why they don't give these guys time off unless they are injured. I mean actual time off. Not just time travelling but not wrestling. Every wrestler should get at least 1 month a year off to go home, and spend time with their families, and to get a mental and physical health break. In the end, it would result in just about as much time they would lose due to injuries and burnout. Plus you get a fresh, invigorated wrestler back, and the fans are excited about them again.

I'd have to dig through some interviews to find it, but said he said it a lot last summer after coming back. He mentioned it during a few radio appearances. He also said it again more recently at that big convention Q&A he did back in June. Someone may have a better handle on specific instances. He's never specifically alluded to a guaranteed time frame, but he said that he had planned to take an extended leave after Money in the Bank last year and it just simply wasn't in the cards. He's also mentioned that he could never be "like The Undertaker or Triple H" and wrestle into his 40's.

If hes so drained out, I don't see why they don't just have him cut promos and interviews but not wrestle as much. I feel it'd make the title seem more prestigious, just like in the old days

He's a mega-heel and should take advantage of that by refusing to wrestle matches in order to stay healthy.

Honestly - I think it's because they're prepping him for a match against Rock and they wanted a big heel to go against him. I could honestly see Punk go face again sometime next year - especially if they get another heel going. (Ziggler seems like a good choice at this point)

If he stays to what he's doing now and maybe more, he could become bigger than ever before.
I don't blame the guy for feeling drained, the last Injury break he had was in 2009 *I think* and then after MITB last year he left for those few weeks. But I gotta give props to the guy for what he's done in the past year to the company and his reputation. For what he's done, I think he deserves a break, but he's mainly the reason some people still watch wrestling, so WWE wouldn't want ratings to go down. But Punk will be and is close to being the top guy of the company, but as time goes on things will change.

Vince made several concessions to Punk to keep him around in 2011 because he was burnt out then.the Title reigns and his own bus with driver were part of that......several sites and mags recently have commented that Punk is totally burnt out and will most likely seek a break after Mania.

Everyone needs a break. Whens the last time he truely has had one? Cena's getting his break right now. Two of the biggest stars in the WWE being out isnt what should happen. So giving each one a break at different times is the right thing to do.
As for the comparison to Bret Hart... Im not even gonna. Two different people, with two different styles.

Thats what WWE and Vince does he has a few select guys that are the center of the company and they work and work not stop running themselves into the ground. Yea granted they love the business and to entertain the crowd but you gotta think your body can only take so much esp. when your a wrestling always on the road and barley have a break this where guys need to step up and show what they got. But in WWE fashion that wont happen
