Are there any distinguishable differences between the carded versions of Hogan and Macho and the ones that came with the JC Penny ring.(not ya one came in a bag ) I know mine came from the JC Penny ring, and the ring had blue turn buckles that weren't flat on top. Is that ring rarer? I don't see many of them.

The ring w/the rounded posts was the original release. I had that one as soon as it came out. Later on the ones w/the flat tops was released. I have no numbers but in my experience the original was tougher to find. Not sure how rare it's considered though.
Also as far as I ever knew there's no difference in the JCP figures at all.

No difference in figures bar the bag. As far as the rings go i seem to remember the story was the first release with the raised tops was changed due to health and safety due to kids lotentially falling on them? Or i could have just made that up in my head!

Nice article, so strange it was so long after they were released.
Can't see it being a hazard however.

I believe the green trunks macho was never released - and the figure went out in his traditional orange trunks. I think hasbro changed their minds about the colour of Savage's pants at the last minute.
I have NEVER seen a green-pants Savage, MOC or loose.

I have always questioned if the 'Green Trunks' Savage was ever produced and if it was just a computer image, or if it was the 'Orange Trunks' version and again they changed the colour on the computer. Thing is there can potentially be loads of JC Penny rings and figures out there, but you would never know if they are anymore unless they are still boxes and bagged! The two figures were released on the normal blue carded range and the ring was also released in Europe individually!

In my own opinion, I personally feel there are no green-panted Savage's anywhere, because if there was - some would have turned up on ebay and sold for hundreds - and you NEVER see it on ebay.
it's a bit like that rythem n' blues Greg Valentine, a mere picture of it - but the figure was never actually released.
