It is not really an error per se. As they story goes, the company apparently thought Jimmy was black and until they realized the error, made about 100 that were released.
There was a guy a few years ago who had 3 or four of them on Ebay until they sold.

Let's get it straight. An error implies an error in production not an error in design. This figure was created black and therefore it is not an error it is a standard figure which would later become a variant when it was redesigned.

It's an error as the company did not plan to make two different Jimmy Harts.
As to a variant (or running change) Knobbs and Sags with and w/o tattoos are a variant. The tats were put on after the initial production run in Series One.
