I got thinking, what's the purpose of wwe today?
in the golden era, every guy had their gimmick and people watched for they're favourite character. didn't matter much about what they're fighting about, but each guy had their 'thing'.
attitude era was based around story lines, people still had characters like Kane mankind undertaker etc, then people like dx rock and Austin, and these guys were marketable and merchandise sellers, but it was mostly the wwf being about vince and the wrestlers were involved in the company runnings and had issues with what went on.
but what does wwe today bring? who can sell great merchandise? what are they fighting about? what's they're purpose? I only watch for punk tbh

The wrestlers are too generic nowadays and there is far too much reality in the product. There are a few stand out guys like Ryback, Sin Cara, Mysterio, Punk, Bryan and Kane but the rest are just generic trunk wrestlers.
The writing also sucks and titles don't mean anything now either

The young wrestlers are like clones of each other and they all wear trunks aswell which is a major problem.
Back in the 90's guys like HBK, Bret Hart, Undertaker and Macho Man all wore different attires and stood out from each other and they had characters.
The only wrestlers that interest me in todays product are Kane, Bryan, Punk, Ziggler, Cena, R truth, Kofi and Ryback, the rest are just copies of each other so if you like 1 you like theme all.

I think there needs to be more competition for championships.

To make money. That's what it's been about since day one, and that's what it will always be about.
The business model changes over time to adapt to what makes the most money. Right now, they're captivating the hearts of children, and the wallets of parents, so character development means a whole lot less than it used to.

Yeah the majority of wrestlers have no defining feature or marketability. The majority of the roster is generic.

Yeah that is my main problem, if they were had own gimmick, attire and moveset they might actually get over. Look at Tensai he was a breath of fresh air but the smart ass fans couldn't get the Albert gimmick out of their head.

Someone who works differently from everyone else, who has a lot of talent and is completely unique and they completely f it up because horrible booking and a bunch of smarks.

I have no clue why he even left New Japan. He had to have known his gimmick was not going to go over simply by the fact people would know him as Albert. He was making good money and was over huge in NJPW. Bad mistake on his part.

I think it was because his wife was having their kid so he came back to WWE so he could be closer to home/be home more often.

Yeah, and I'm sure he didn't realize that todays wrestling fans were so bad.

Or maybe it flopped because he sucks...and this is coming from someone that liked his times as Albert and A-Train. He's very out of shape and that botch at Survivor Series was just embarrassing. Maybe WWE doesn't want to invest their time in someone that looks like a slob and can't even take a proper t-bone suplex without falling on his face. Which is ironic because that's what this entire Tensai run has done, fallen on it's face. Don't even blame it on the "smarks" who chan't Albert. They chant Goldberg at Ryback and he still does great, so the blaming the chants stuff is just idiotic.

thanks for making my point in one word Haha. its just how today's stars are too generic and have no defining marketable attributes, like many wwf guys in the 90's did have.

The only thing horrible at Survivor Series was the booking, whoever thought that Brodus could successfully flip a 360 pound over his head is stupid. According to you a slob is someone who doesn't have six pack abs I guess. Let me know when you work with the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Try not to fail so hard next time. k?

You'd be wrong on that assumption, like you always are. Samoa Joe, Dusty Rhodes, Big Show, Kane, and many others that don't have six packs are some of my favorites of all time. Try not to fail so hard.

In fact Samoa Joe is 280 lbs of fat. I haven't seen any of the big men take moves like Tensai has since he came back. I'm not sure of many that have ever, Vader and Bam Bam Bigelow are pretty much it. And even if they are some of your favorites why the hell would you even criticize a wrestler for being fat? Hypocrite much? You've failed in every way imaginable.

I'm not criticizing him for being fat, I'm criticizing him for looking being terrible. Haven't seen any of the guys take moves that Tensai has? Like what? He hasn't taken anything that Big Show hasn't already taken multiple times. Big Show can outwork Tensai any day of the week and entertain me more. And lol at the "mostly solid"

Right now, they're captivating the hearts of children, and the wallets of parents, so character development means a whole lot less than it used to. Basically this...its all about making money like any other business...if WWE is doing things because the internet fans say so and not making or gaining anything, WWE will go under. Right now the safe bet is catering to kids and parents, thats where the money is. Most people here criticize WWE for every little thing, thinking they know whats good for the company, when clearly they don't; just watch comments on here and rants on Youtube - absolutely brutal!...yet those "fans" don't spend on a dime on supporting them, they would rather stream the ppvs, torrent the DVDs, not buying merchandise, and bash the product endlessly hoping they go out of business...yet think WWE should cater to them.

And lol at the "mostly solid" You put Kane in a list of wrestlers you enjoy that are "fat". Big Show has barely taken any devastating moves for years, I don't recall seeing him take running powerslams or Orton's DDT (though I could be wrong). I also haven't seen him take a bump from the top rope to the outside of the ring. I don't give a crap whether you like him or not, but saying that he isn't a good worker is among the stupidest things said of all time.
