I've never seen the Starrcade match, whats so bad about it? Hogan pretty much beats Sting like a government mule the whole match and pins him. Nick Patrick supposedly makes a "fast count" that was in all actuality, one of the slowest three counts I've seen... EVER. Bret is at ringside and says "Hey, that was a fast count!" he knocks Nick Patrick out and Bret takes over as referee, restarts the match... Sting fights off NWO members... splashes Hogan and slaps him in the Scorpion Death Lock and wins the title. Such a letdown after a year of build up. It really, TRULY showed who had all the power in WCW.

plus the crowd had NO idea what was going on.....when Hogan "won" they sat there in stunned silence.only good part from that match was when Sting slapped Hogan.....all downhill after that.

the problem was Hogan BEAT Sting - CLEANLY! with the legdrop and a SLOW 1-2-3 count. this was after Hogan beating on Sting for like 75% of the match.
in essence it made Sting look weak, Hogan look strong, and gave the impression that "WCW's Savior" had to screw Hogan out of the title to get it.

I didnt mind Hogan beating on Sting the whole match. i actually liked it. I wanted to see him beat on Sting and keep going for pins and never getting it. Thus showing Sting, like WCW, will take a beating but will never give up. Then it even gets to the point where the nWo runs out to help Hogan but are fought off by Luger, Giant, Bret (who will show where he stands at that point)...In the ruckus Hogan is watching the fight on the floor from the corner when Sting pulls himself up by the ropes in the other corner. Then as he turns around he notices Hogan in the corner with his back to him and comes across the ring with the Stinger splash. As Hogan hits the mat, Sting grabs the legs pulls him into the center of the ring and locks on the Scorpion until Hogan gives up. The crowd goes crazy, the WCW guys on the outside of the ring come in to celebrate and everything ends perfectly.
Its really not a hard ending to write, Ill never figure out how WCW screwed it up so bad.

That is more or less how I pictured the match going and ending. ![:)](http://www.wrestlingfigs.com/images/smiley.gif) That match was such a big deal at the time and it was heavily hyped and anticipated. As several have said, the ending to this match and the way Sting was treated was the first nail in the coffin for WCW.

Sting vs Hogan @ Starrcade 97 is still one of the WORST booking travesties ever committed to the screen. Damn Hogans ego and Bischoffs cowardice to hell. LOL! you and I will argue for this with the rest of the world for all eternity.I still believe Hogan-Sting was the bullet that entered the stomach of WCW,and started to slow gut-poisoning that eventually led to it's death, even after the bullet wound had healed! this was THE most hyped match in WCW history, and one of the most in wrestling history. WWF fans were watching it. WCW fans were watching it. ECW fans were watching it. casual viewers were watching it. and the frigging blew it. big time. and I honestly think it was the 1st step on the way to the end, even if no one knew it at the time. cause it showed that a star's ego would win out over the proper booking for a match. "Doesn't matter what is best for the promotion. I have creative control over my character and matches. F-you!" in retrospect,it's kind of a wonder Hogan even LOST! i mean, really, i'm surprised he didn't put himslef over Sting and be done with it! I like that you start your post with that and then spend three paragraphs completely agreeing with him.

Sting should have gone out and simply dominated Hogan for 20 minutes before winning the title at Starcade. Hogan had been dominating since his heel turn, and the fans finally wanted to see him get what was coming to him. Instead, we got the exact opposite with Hogan dominating the whole thing and getting a clean pinfall. Hogan looked great, and Sting looked like a fool by having Bret restart a match that ended cleanly.

Seriously, it's the main event of the biggest match of the biggest PPV in the company's entire history. No way there was a communication breakdown. I have always honest to goodness thought that it was all Hogan's doing.

I guess it could be maybe there were multiple finishes discussed before the show started and he didn't know which one it was gonna be, or maybe they rewrote the finish during the show cause WCW was known to do that......but I'm with you, it does seem a little odd.

like knowing what the backstage chaos was like in WCW it could have been a breakdown in communication.....but IMO its unlikely.

The nWo should have simply been the origional three members with Syxx, Giant, and Scott Steiner as the only other members. The group got so watered down that it seemed that they had more members than WCW. And WCW guys should have been percieved as hanging with the nWo. Luger, Flair, The Steiners, Giant, and eventually Sting were all beaten so bad by Hogan and his cronies that the fans never believed that WCW had a chance to defeat them, even with Goldberg. Thats the thing that I think hurt them too, because we never got a true finish to the storyline. The nWo just kept poping back up here and there and we never got to see Sting or Goldberg finally end the group once and for all. The begining of the end for the nWo should have came at Starcade 97 w/ Sting defeating Hogan, and then with the group starting to crumble and an eventually break up with Hogan and Nash feuding with eachother. After 1997, WCW didn't need the nWo because if used correctly, they had Sting already set up to be their top guy, Bret Hart coming in with huge momentum, and Goldberg who was just about to jump onto the scene. I think WCW would have continued to dominate the ratings had they ended the nWo stuff in early 1998 and focused on Sting, Hart, and Goldberg chasing for the world title, Hogan and Nash feuding over the breakup of the nWo, and pushing guys like DDP, Benoit, Booker T, Jericho, and Raven to eventually be the new top guys (obviously politics would never allow this to happen). I agree with this. The WCW vs. nWo never got the proper ending it needed. Hogan, Hall, Nash, DiBiase, Syxx, & Giant being the ONLY members. Bischoff Savage, and Steiner could be included later as time unfolds. Had I been in charge it would have looked like this: 1996 = The nWo is born and dominates and the main members gain control of most of the titles. WCW starts to fall part 1997 = Back and forth year but nWo still holds the upper hand. STing returns and wins the title from Hogan at Starrcade to start WCW's rise. 1998 = WCW starts to dominate but STing loses title to Hogan after Scott Steiner turns heel. However, Team WCW (Sting, Goldberg, Luger, Rick Steiner, Road Warriors, and some others) win the battle with the end being Goldberg pinning Hogan to win the title.
