The reason I am impressed by his reasoning is twofold; yes I agree with him, but more than that it's like I said: usually people making the case for gun ownership do it from a position like mine where they are gun owners and obviously have skin in the game. He doesn't, so I was pointing out that you don't even have to be a gun owner to see that side of the issue. I think that comes down to his being more anti-government than anything. Liberals trust in the government more, conservatives don't. I think his viewpoint has more to do with not wanting the government tell him what to do than being pro-gun - just my thoughts.

I generally have a pretty unenthused view of the capabilities, trustworthiness, and effectiveness of the government independent of my views on guns, but yes I would make that assumption as well until told otherwise.

Nutjobs propose crazy bills all the time. Did said bill get any sort of footing at all? Highly doubtful.

Nutjobs propose crazy bills all the time. Did said bill get any sort of footing at all? Highly doubtful. It's not one or two nutjobs in the case of Illinois, it's the whole Democratic apparatus. They've been proposing many different bills and discussing them in committee. They haven't given a full vote to the bills yet.

It's both. Government shouldn't tell us what to do and because they've shown before they have no problem attacking US citizens I'm pro-gun and pro-defending yourself from government encroachment.

Apparently, there was a school shooting at a college in Houston. Details are still developing.

What about the kid in New Mexico who killed his family? Great guy.
Oh, apparently it was video games' fault, my bad.

Damn games, I better stop playing before I snap. Unfortunately, I don't have access to buy a gun! Looks like no shooting rampage for me.

I'm buying a handgun next month as a matter of fact. Can't wait to get it, take it to the range, and shoot at paper targets like MOST gun owners do. Gonna be awesome.

It can become addicting though and right now ammo is very hard to get and expensive. If you haven't yet, I would recommend going to the range and renting a couple of different guns and if you can afford it get some instruction from a class or personal instructor. If not if you have any friends with experience let them show you some things. Main thing is proper safety handling. As fun as it can be it's not a toy and not a game. What I can't stand and just cannot tolerate is that when I go to the range and people are laughing and acting stupid just not paying attention to what they are doing. At my range they have benches behind the shooting booths. I don't know how many times I had to tell people behind me to stop waving their guns around and point them down and away. Idiots. Anyway, if you don't know anyone the range master should be able to help you out if you are new at this. Best of luck! JS

JS Well, fortunately my job as a CO grants and requires firearms classes and qualification under three different weapons (.40 Handgun, Mini 14 rifle, and shotgun) to be able to work certain posts. Long story short, I get paid to shoot guns on the range for a few weeks a year. So yeah, I'm good with all the ins and outs of firearms safety and what not, and boy oh boy does stupidity on the range tick me off too. I'm still pretty new to the gun world, but I'm primarily going to be a pistol guy. Rifles and shotguns don't interest me as much. Smith and Wesson M&P .40 is what I'll be getting (sorry if I can't say that here, lol). It's what we'd been shooting with and I absolutely love it. Gotta have one.

SW M&P is a great gun, always hear and have read great things about it. I don't like the .40 though, seems to be a lot of snap to the kick. Never shot an M&P though but I have checked them out at the gun shops. If you've shot a Glock .40, how does the M&P .40 compare kick-wise? I'd assume basically the same since around the same weight and similar spring/slide design. I'd actually like to get a .40 though because it's the only ammo I actually see readily available on most shelves. I am thinking maybe a .40 that's all steel, something heavy may tone down that .40 snap. Gun show is this weekend.

The M&P I'd been shooting has a stainless slide, but I've been told that the home version has has a blue steel slide and is noticeably heavier than the stainless. Hopefully that will help my accuracy because the snap from the stainless .40 makes shooting from 25 yds a bit tricky for me. The ammo being pretty much in abundance still is another reason I decided to got .40 and not .9. That and the fact that .45 ammo is expensive, lol.

I've got 2 9mm, a .45, a .22, and an AR (.223 or 556). I shoot the .22 the most (Ruger sr-22) because it's cheap ammo and is just fun and easy to shoot. My favorite pistol is my XD-M 9mm (Stainless slide/4.5" Barrel) which I had Tritium/Fiber Optic sites put on. I just love that gun, Trigger is smooth as butter. JS
