When Diesel entered the 1994 Royal Rumble, he was just a mid-level heel who received little reaction from the crowd. Less than twenty minutes later when he was eliminated, the Providence Civic Center was chanting his name and gave him a standing ovation.

I really think that a "Stone Cold"/anti-hero character could have worked as early as 1994. The crowd loved how badass Diesel was during the match. I'm really surprised the WWF didn't fully capitalize on it.

Of course it could have worked, and ECW knew that and they went with it, which is why ECW became popular.
If you watch old ECW shows from 93 and 94, the heels were cheered more than the baby face, and the only way a heel remained a heel in ECW was for him to insult the fans intelligence. (Like how Cactus Jack did it in 1995)
It's simple to say that the bad a$$ wrestler would have worked back in 1977 too. I seen an episode of WWWF Championship Wrestling where Superstar Billy Graham came out as the new WWWF Champion, and the guys popped big time for him and cheered.

Razor was getting cheered as a heel in 93, too. But I've said it before and I'll say it again; Diesel was the original Stone Cold Steve Austin. It's a huge shame that Vince turned him into a face after he won the title.
Also, has anyone ever noticed how Diesel absolutely clobbers Virgil? I wonder what Virgil did to annoy Diesel, but he lays some hard shots into his face before tossing him out like he's nothing. Go to about 15:09 in that video to see it.

I'm assuming it was Virgil's receipt for hitting Diesel in the face a few seconds prior lol.

It just seems that whenever you hear about the advent of the "Attitude Era" or the rise of "Stone Cold", most people contribute it to WCW kicking Vince's ass or because America was getting edgier or because of shows like Jerry Springer and South Park. As if the WWF crowd was not ready for a more edgy product until the late-90s when clearly they had no problem cheering for the bad guy many years prior to that.

Diesel got over so much as a bad ass heel that he got the title. It was just Vince wanting his next Hogan and turned him face, but it just didn't work.
I still can't believe that after his performance in the rumble that he didn't get a match at WM10, a squash match would have been perfect for him.

Anvil Fan mentioned this in another thread and he's right.
Diesel really was the original "cool heel" who was ultimately turned face by the fans before he was actually turned face by the company.

I also felt that having Owen in the Rumble was awkward considering he just had the tag match where he turned on Bret and got a ton of heat.... just to be fed to Diesel?
Unless he was going to win or at least be one of the last guys in the ring, him being in that match made zero sense.

yes it could........and Nash was very good at playing this type of character......he did it again during the nWo.
when the powerbomb was banned Nash used to use it anyway......and started getting over as hell as a rebellious babyface.....I guarantee if he had stuck around in 96 he would have been getting cheered against HBK.

Yeah I can't help but think that Summerslam 1996 would have been a much bigger deal if it had been Diesel vs Shawn. Not that Vader wasn't awesome. But he was booked HORRIBLY against Shawn. They had a 400 lb monster heel run in fear from the 225lb dancing face.

Watching the 94 rumble now funnily enough and the thing I noticed about diesel also happened to vader 2 years later... His singlet is on backwards... This is annoying me for some reason I really liked diesel as a heel but when he went to kissing babies it just did not work for him at all. Theres some people thy cant pull off being a full on good guy like diesel, orton and Austin. Sent from my iPhone using ProBoards app

No, the seam is one thing as its usually on the back of the singlet. It's easier to notice vaders backward singlet but diesel definitely had his one backwards too, the back is a lower style that the front whereas usually a singlet has a lower front. Vader's you could tell cause it said "Vader Time" on his back and not his chest/stomach. What a way to make your debut, by wearing your ring gear backwards!

I think Piper was the original "cool heel" and would have been the perfect anti hero. Had they had an authority figure back then for him to butt heads with.

You all seem to forget that The Road Warriors were doing the Anti Hero thing back in the early 80's. It got to the point that Promoters had no choice but to have them team against the heals because they were causing the baby faces to get booed out of the building everywhere they went.

This is very true, but my argument was directed towards the WWF. No matter what he says, Vince desperately missed Hogan and tried replicating him at every turn. He was still looking for that classic hero even at a time when his own audience was getting behind a badass heel. I think Vince was afraid to push that kind of character in 1994 because deep inside he just wanted someone more like Hogan to lead the company. He knew it was a gimmick that worked and might have been apprehensive to go against the grain during a rocky period for the WWF.
