Still buying, just to make a quick buck. I only sort of agree.

the only time I have been annoyed with a custom.....is when I saw Apoc using Elite 6 Matt Hardy's like they were John cena figs. That figs not easy to come by. And he only cares about flashbacks so...it made me sad. I guess it just bums me out when ppl use rarer figs for customs. bwa haha, that made my day. Those tights are sooooo good tho. Macho Man, The Rockers, Rick Rude... So Many applications for them... I don't know if I fit the scalper/customizer profile as I only buy my figs on ebay and hardly ever turn much of a profit...

Good topic for a thread. 80% of my collection has been found at retail. So none of this has bothered me. I enjoy the customs and as long as people pay $50 - $80 for a figure, there will always be scalpers. Just be smart. I almost paid $50 for Nash so many times but I was patient and got him thru a trade in the classifieds board. Cost me $20.

Our impatience as collectors has made room for a profit when it comes to scalping. If everyone would just wait until they hit retail, there wouldn't be any of it.

East Coast, 3 Matt Hardys were harmed during the making of these customs

What about people the buy one to open and one to keep MOC? Why do they need two? Where do you draw the line, one, two, three? Not being argumentative, but how many figures can I buy to customize before you think I'm as bad as a scalper? Very good points. IMO buying a few extra figures of someone to make customs figures(Be it people who have not been made, or a better version of the person) for your personal collection is nowhere the same as stockpiling hard to find figures and charging sometimes 4 or 5 times(if not more) the store cost. *EDIT* Also, I know a lot of customizers do sell their work(I do as well). However I feel you are paying for the work done to the figure, not just the figure itself.

Apoc if I had an e6 Hardy, I wouldn't care. But all the figs from e6 are a pain to find

If I had a second one of that Hardy I totally would have purple Rockers right now. But because I only have the one is the only reason it's still Matt Hardy.

I bought 4 Basic and 4 Elite versions of Brock Lesnar...all for customs and fix-ups. None of them were to sell. I'm just a huge Lesnar fan and wanted several Mattel versions of Brock.
In doing so though, I've come to realize that scalping isn't lazy. It's actually hard work to go to multiple stores, day in and day out. Granted, their time could be better spent working and contributing to society. But I really wouldn't use the word lazy to describe these wretched, rat bastards.

This is very interesting topic. And I've read some good points on here.
However, I have to disagree. For many, like myself, I find customizing to be a hobby more than actual work. Don't get me wrong, I have sold customs before. And I have bought figures before with the sole intention of using it for a custom. Usually I buy them on eBay and don't look for rare and expensive figures to keep costs low. So I don't think I'm hurting anyone there. But here are two points that I want to emphasize:
1) It's very difficult for some customizers to continue doing what they do and enjoy it without getting some financial return for it. It other words, it ensures that we are able to continue to do what we love and enjoy, especially for those who cannot easily drop money on these figures.
2) Like McElroy stated, customizing takes skill and time. Scalping does not. You can't just buy what customizers create anywhere. It's not mass-produced. It's less of a toy, then it is a piece of art. And I don't believe customizers should be placed in the same category (or even this sentence) as scalpers.
But I understand where the other side is coming from.

I don't see buying multiples of high demand figs to resell at jacked up prices on eBay as being the same as buying multiples to use for customs, regardless of whether they are for personal collection or resale. As others have said, the customizer is putting their time, skills, and supplies (in the case of repaints) into the custom before they resell so you are paying for a service as much as you are for the actual figure. Anybody who reads these boards knows there is a high demand for specific attires that have never been done by Mattel (Savage, HBK, Ultimate Warrior repaints or alternate Undertaker attires for example) as well as for wrestlers that have not/will not be produced by Mattel (Hulk Hogan, Scott Steiner, Owen Hart for example). If you can make a few extra bucks providing a supply for that demand then I say more power to you...as long as you produce quality work. I am bothered by "customizers" who make no effort to produce a reasonable figure. I remember a post a while back where someone saw an eBay auction for "Damien Sandow elite" that was a Legends Hillbilly Jim minus the hat and overalls. That is disgusting. But I digress. I know I've contributed to the "problem" since I make a lot of fix-ups and customs for my personal collection. I think I have bought at least 6 Miz's, 6 Funks, 6 DM HHHs, 4 Duggans, 4 Texas Tornados, and 4 Kevin Von Erichs - all to use for fix-ups that I keep for my personal collection. Funny thing is I always seem to find more of these figs fairly cheap every time I search Amazon so I don't think I'm adversely affecting price or supply If the Bushwhackers 2 pack was reasonably priced I would buy 2-3 of them right now so I could work on the Dudleys, New Jack, Sabu, and Nikita Koloff. It is my mistake in not buying them up when they were new and readily available

So, neither scalpers or customizers have been a problem for me. So personally, neither of them bother me at all. But, at least in my mind, buying a figure just to customize it falls under the same category as scalping. If you are buying a figure with no intention of keeping that figure in your collection, to me, it feels no different than buying them all up to turn a profit. . Your thoughts? I have no problem with people flipping figures or customizing them. Once a person spends money on a figure, it becomes his/her property to do with as he/she pleases. If you want to buy 10 Punks and store them for your great, great grandchildren, that's your call. If you buy an expensive exclusive and give it to a kid to play with until it's unrecognizable, that's not my business. If you are so rich that you can buy Elites to use as target practice, I'm envious of your cash flow.

Well I can only speak for me, but when I customize a figure it's for my personal collection. Where a scalper tries to buy all the hot figures in an area and then sell them for a profit...which to me is a lazy and scummy way to try and make a dollar. Pretty much took the words out of my mouth. If you're buying a figure to customize with the sole purpose of adding something to your collection that's completely different from buying nine Brock Lesnar figures just to put eight of them on eBay.
