You've just seen it? It's been going viral for atleast a month now. Have you seen the 1990s version of the Harlem Shake which they converted in a cheesy knockoff type which is what you just heard?

Was it even named after that Harlem or was it just a word they used? Because that is not the only Harlem in the United States. The original dance was named after Harlem, NY. The more recent song title is referencing the same dance, but has nothing to do with it as far as I can tell. Some guy in pink spandex made a video doing a separate dance to the new song, and so people associate the title with the random pink spandex dude's dance. |

The meme has NOTHING to do with the actual Harlem Shake dance. It's called Harlem Shake because when the beat drops in the song, the guy goes "Now do the Harlem Shake". That's the only connection. People crying because it's not the actual dance being done in the meme videos are silly.
I would say that this meme is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I can't because I'm not even embarrassed to like it. I think Harlem Shake is hilarious.

People get so bent out of shape about it "not being true to the dance", and that's because the only similarity it has with the dance is the name! Seriously, people need to get that through their heads. Personally, some of the Harlem Shake videos are funnier than others, but I do enjoy them to some extent. |
